J.J. Abrams To Direct New ‘Star Wars’ Movie For Disney

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says. Despite saying publicly that he didn’t want to direct a new Star Wars, Abrams was courted heavily by producer Kathleen Kennedy to take the job. Expected in 2015, Episode VII will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2005′s Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Michael Arndt is writing the script for the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ franchise by Disney. The company bought Lucasfilm in October for $4 billion, with the Star Wars franchise the jewel in the crown. At the time, CEO Bob Iger said three more Star Wars films were in the pipeline. Abrams’ other space-based franchise sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, comes out May 17. This weekend, the PGA will honor the Lost creator and Revolution producer with its 2013 Norman Lear Award For Television. Abrams is repped by CAA and Oasis Media Group.

Suprising pick!

Not so long ago J.J. Abrams spoke about how he wouldn't feel right doing both Star Trek and Star Wars.

I'll take it though, he knows his stuff when it comes to adventure and sci-fi. The Star Trek reboot was well done (outside of casting Eric Bana, who is just dreadful) Got a good writer in Arndt and a director who pays attention to what fans want and knows how to direct action you can follow while developing character without being hokey.

You should be, they've assembled an excellent staff for this film. These hirings speak loud and clear to the fans that they don't intend to botch this, like the prequels were.

Michael Arndt (writer), Simon Kinberg (consultant), Lawrence Kasdan (consultant), Kathleen Kennedy (producer) and J.J. Abrams (producer / director) - that is one helluva group to helm a film.

My friend who works at an agency in L.A., was told that this movie is expected to have a final cost, after percentages, talent and production (both shooting and post) of $600 million. I'm sure it'll make easily double that back, but still , damn they are sinking serious cash into this.

I was also told that there are indeed "side projects" aside from the main thread of films being planned as well. Kasdan and Kinberg are consulting on Episode VII to supposedly make sure everything will line up with the projects they'll be writing.

Exciting times to be a Star Wars geek for sure.

600 million is a lot. i think avatar only hit 350 million but i could be wrong. they must be shooting for 2 billion. at least they are hoping for it.

Really glad they got JJ. 2009 star trek was great. That got me to start watching the shows cuz I never watched them before. I think its really fitting though when there was such a big fight between star trek and star wars that the director be the same for both reboots. I love both (really they are super different. Star wars being more fighting and action and star trek being more about the story and philosophical part of it) and it will be great that this guy is directing it.

The prequels were not botched. They are solid entries to the star wars universe.

The older movies present the story better but the newer movies illustrate the story better.
