LOS ANGELES – Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind "Star Wars," from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It's also making a seventh movie in the "Star Wars" series called "Episode 7," set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years.
The Walt Disney Co. announced the blockbuster agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock Tuesday. The deal includes Lucasfilm's prized high-tech production companies, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, as well as rights to the "Indiana Jones" franchise.
Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement that the acquisition is a great fit and will help preserve and grow the "Star Wars" franchise.
"The last `Star Wars' movie release was 2005's `Revenge of the Sith' -- and we believe there's substantial pent-up demand," Iger said.
Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the division's president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new "Star Wars" films.
Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass `Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."
The deal brings Lucasfilm under the Disney banner with other brands including Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC, all companies that Disney has acquired over the years. A former weatherman who rose through the ranks of ABC, Iger has orchestrated some of the company's biggest acquisitions, including the $7.4 billion purchase of animated movie studio Pixar in 2006 and the $4.2 billion acquisition of comic book giant Marvel in 2009.
Disney shares were not trading with stock markets closed due to the impact of Superstorm Sandy in New York.

Wow, that's pretty insane. This move especially, but altogether, what Disney is doing. Disney and Apple. Two absolute monopoly powerhouses in their respective fields/markets.

Absolutely. One of the biggest on this site. Big supporter of our official Star Wars thread. Windu is as well. I have mixed emotions about this, but mainly more positive. The bad is mainly changing companies like this and although GL supposedly will still have some say in future movies, it does worry me about just how much change there will be (possibly for the worse, though I hope not of course). I'm pretty skeptical, but at the same time, stoked because of all the plans now had this not been done, we would not be getting any potential or future movies in like forever. This brings back Star Wars to life again, but hopefully they don't [expletive] it up.

I am so psyched. I know some people hated 1-3 but I thought they were pretty good. I love that the star wars franchise isnt over. Been watching it sense I was a little kid. Probably seen each one like 30 times and played a bunch of star wars games. And even if it does suck who care. Wont damage the 1st movies.

I expect Disney to for the first time take the franchise into a Rated R direction. I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

More PG 13. Star wars has never really been R. I think they will do well though. Gotta be optimistic.

Where do you expect them to go from here though? What kind of story/ies can we expect? What familiar characters as well as new?

The only direction they can go (other than remaking the "older" movies") is to the expanded universe. Luke's son Ben Skywalker, Han's and Leia's kids Jacen, Anakin, and Jaina, Luke reestablishing the Jedi Council, etc.

There's been no mention whatsoever of them remaking the old films though right? If there has or ever is, would you be in favor or do you believe those should eternally be untouched and un-messed with?

I think they have to be new actors Luke, Han etc all probably in their 60's now.

Fun Fact about Harrison Ford. in Empire Strikes Back when they wrote the script about Han being freeze to death, they didn't know if Harrison would be back for the 3rd movie so they had to find a way to write Han off

Well now you know, and Sam Jackson was willing to get paid less to be Mace Windu because he was a huge fan growing up and he just wanted to be in the movie

 Lmao. Obviously too old.

I meant like wouldn't have a problem remaking considering it might take some of the classic element away of those original legendary actors that portrayed those classic characters in the films.

Windu, did you know?

no

Well now you know
