Injury Update: Kobe’s Foot

Posted Image

Published by Mike Trudell on October 27, 2012 2:43 pm

With Dwight Howard and Jordan Hill returning from respective back injuries, the only question mark heading into Tuesday’s regular season opener was Kobe Bryant’s right foot.

Bryant initially strained the foot in last Sunday’s preseason loss to Sacramento, and called it “painful” when addressing the media on Tuesday. He has not practiced all week, and again sat out Saturday’s session to get treatment from L.A.’s training staff.

That said, there was some optimism surrounding the team that Bryant will be able to play in the season opener against Dallas in three days.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he did play,” said coach Mike Brown. “But we’ll see.”

Head trainer Gary Vitti and Bryant himself will play a decisive role in whether or not No. 24 is ready, but nobody is going to count out the player NBA GM’s recently voted the league’s toughest.

Kobe's not out on the court at practice again today. Jodie Meeks is playing with the first unit in his place.

Pau on whether Kobe will play Tuesday: "I have my doubts ... It's no joke. I can't remember the last time Kobe didn't practice for 6 days"

Firstly; I'm a pessimist.
Now that that's outta the way;
This news concerns me. It could just be that he is looking big picture, but it's extremely un-Kobe to miss a full week of practice. And kinda pisses me off, because Kobe hurt his wrist in last years preseason trying to throw down on Deandre Jordan. He also tweaked his shoulder dunking in a scrimmage. I know this particular instance was something out of his control, coulda happened to anyone, but it should be used as a lesson for the season; if the starters aren't needed, get 'em off the court. Especially Nash and Kobe. I know two four is feeling like it's 2006 and he's hyped because of the roster changes, but he needs to save it for the playoffs. Just get through the season in one piece. That's the goal. Please no injury bug this season :nervous2:

This injury concerns me .. What's scarier is that Kobe is being silent about it .. Let's pray it isn't anything serious ..

One team, one love, one goal !

Honestly my opinion is that he is sorta hurt, but it's really a way for him to spend time with his family before the season starts, that's why we saw that picture of him and his family at Disneyland. Once the season starts all kobes mind is gonna be on his sixth, so not much family time.

I still think he'll play, But it really worries me that they are being quiet about the injury, other than he was kicked.

It's almost as if the injury is more serious than is being led on

Id rather know the severity of the injury and the time he misses than them being super quiet about it (ala Bynum's injury in 2008). 9 of the first 11 are at home we might be ok if he were to miss the 1st month or so to heal up. We can afford to now. OKC aint gonna come out of the gates with guns blazing. San Antonio maybe, I dont see any other dominant West team

Exactly, I want him to get as much rest as he can. Plus, he can, for the simple fact that he won't have to be the primary ball handler now

So much doom & gloom here. Did no one see what Mike Brown said...

“He’s making progress,” said Brown. “He’s definitely making progress; he’s not going backwards at all.”

As planned, Bryant was re-evaluated by team trainer Gary Vitti and the rest of the medical staff over the weekend, including undergoing an MRI, according to Lakers coach Mike Brown. The MRI merely confirmed a strain and contusion of Bryant's foot, Lakers spokesman John Black said.

"We'll see how he is (Monday) and what he cannot do or can do out on the floor and then kind of go from there," Brown said.

Bryant missed several practices earlier in training camp because of discomfort in the same right foot.

However, sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne that this injury is in a different place on his right foot and is considerably more painful.

@LakersReporter

For whatever it's worth, here's @DwightHoward's thought on Kobe: "I think he's going to come back fine."

If we somehow land Dwight Howard AND Nash (which is one of the biggest reaches I've posted, don't think that will happen), then yeah...I have no problem with it, because Howard won't allow anyone to take Nash off the dribble 30+ minutes a game.

You should reach more often ;)

Actually John Ireland said Meeks is playing with the 1st unit and Kobe sat out.

We should just rest Kobe up tomorrow night, we're not really in desperate need for him to play. Besides, Dirk and Kaman are out so we should be able to win with Nash and Dwight.

Kobe Bryant has missed 4 season openers in his NBA career... The Lakers have won all 4 of those games.

Maybe hes "sitting out" to get these guys going? Pau and MWP have looked extremely complacent since the 1st couple of games.
