I would go against it, I think recognizing HOFers is why the Lakers retire jerseys. I think statues should be given to those were essentially the face of the franchise and did something really special as a Laker. Someone who you would think of when you think of the Lakers. People like Magic, West, and Kobe (who will get his eventually).

No. He was never the face of the franchise. We can't give statues out like candy.

not unless they are gonna do the same for every great laker, which devalues the whole notion

magic has been big for the city as well so that was probably part of the initial thought.

Abdul-Jabbar told the San Francisco Chronicle last month he met Howard only once and that Howard expressed an interest in learning from the former Lakers captain but he never again reached out to Abdul-Jabbar.

‘He’s charming, he’s charismatic, very nice young man,’ Abdul-Jabbar said. ‘Maturity-wise, he doesn’t get it.’

This. +1

And it's like saying Pau Gasol should get a statue also. Windu would commit suicide, or castrate his balls.

No. Statues are for the players who defined an era, on the court and off. They are for players who affected a culture, who spark debates such as "greatest _ of all time?"

James Worthy is an all-time great. But those traits belong to guys like KAJ, Magic, and Kobe. Not Big Game James. No disrespect to him at all, he absolutely deserves his jersey up there in the rafters. But not a statue.
