It's not every day that Apple has to admit one of its own products, well, sucks. (Hell, it's not very often that Apple releases a product that's not at least as good as the alternatives.) But this morning, that's exactly what CEO Tim Cook has done in an open letter on Apple's website.

For our purposes, Cook does suggests Google Maps as an alternative, albeit with a web shortcut, since Google's yet to submit a native Google Maps app for iOS.

Writes Cook:

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

We've got the full letter after the break.

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Tim Cook
Apple’s CEO

I give him props for owning up to it

I haven't really used the maps app, but from what I did see I didn't really see anything wrong with it. What's the problem with it?

Some people had wrong directions being given to them and some places are in the wrong area.

Maps is only one of the issues of iOS6. It's just bad. Wait for 6.1 or 6.2

Considering iphone 5 sales still don't touch Google Android powered handset sales worldwide I doubt they care.

Jobs hated the Google backed Android OS from the get-go because he thought they stole the idea from apple.

Plus more Android OS operated handsets are sold than iOS operated handsets so that probably doesn't help.

And before some apple nuthugger tells me, yes, I know more phones are available to Google for use with their Android OS while Apple just has their own phone/OS.

It's so comical though when you think of all the things Apple uses from other mobile OS's

They're all corporate whores. Android pioneered some of Apple's ideas, and then Apple pioneered some of HTC's technologies for iPhone5 and may be getting sued. It'll always keep going back and fourth with patent wars when it comes to technology, because it is so robust.

What don't you like?

I'm not just being a hater. iOS6 may work fine on iPhone 5, but it sucks on certain models of the iPad and iPod/iPhone that it is available for. For example, iOS6 constantly freezes on an iPad2 in the app store. And Youtube isn't working all the way on some devices.

Like I said, iOS6.0 may just be fine tuned for iPhone5, wait for 6.1 or 6.2

Who ever was in charge of the job to make the maps thing probably lost there job. I mean how could you say to your superiors that the maps app was working. Should have just not changed it and tried to finish it up later with a newer update.

At least they owned up to it. Hopefully they fix it soon.
