Social Media in NBA (Twitter/University)

I have the end of October in rhetoric in my program (Mediamanagement which im studying in university) will give a presentation on the theme: Social Media: Twitter using the example of NBA players.
My table of contents is as follows:
-What is Twitter? Who are the users?
- What is the NBA? How big is the fanbase?
-Emergence of the Twitter boom in the NBA
-Pro/Contra Examples of "twitterns"
So and my problem lies precisely in the 4th Point. Does anyone of you exactly when and especially how this TWITTER BOOM is in the U.S. but originated mainly the NBA, which was the biggest influence here? Marketing, numbers, etc?

Basically a easy way for celebrity's to voice what's on there mind to all there fans very easily.
