Roster cuts by Tuesday

Inside Socal: Not that it's a huge deal, considering how deep the Lakers are this year, but Phil Jackson reminded everyone that the Lakers must trim their roster down to 15 by Tuesday. It currently sits at 17, so the guys on the bubble are likely: CJ Giles, Brandon Heath, Coby Karl and Joe Crawford.

Giles has looked impressive and athletic in the few times we've seen him pay in practice and exhibition games, and Phil Jackson has spoken glowingly about him on several occasions. But that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll make the team.

``He's really talented young man,'' Jackson said of Giles. ``He has recognition troubles sometimes but he's the only one who really wasn't here during our summer league. He came in right before preseason started so he didn't have the opportunity to learn as much as the other guys so he's been behind a little bit, but his athleticism makes up for it.''

Contracts also figure into the equation. Giles and Heath are free agents, with no guaranteed money. Sun Yue received $100,000 after passing his physical and becomes fully guaranteed for the rest of the year if he's on the opening day roster. Karl becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster January 9, as does Josh Powell.

that is also a good idea but im sure they will sign at least one of the guys.

look at the free agent list. there is no one close to pj brown out there. maybe a sam casell type of a sitution can occur
Giles is too long and athletic too let him fall in a rival's hands

I expect 4 people to be cut, because the Laker staff already said that they want to keep 1 space open to maybe sign a free agent during the season. Whoever those 4 players are, it's going to be a hard decision for the Lakers.

Karl, Heath, Giles and Yue don't deserve to make it right now. But when Karl doesn't try to do too much (i.e. he stays within the system and doesn't dribble too much - had some nice passes the other night and seems like a Walton-type player) I can see him making the squad - I think Phil seems to like him. Crawford is a maybe, he doesn't make as many mistakes as Heath does and looks less shakey handling the ball. Then again he doesn't show a lot of the slasher abilities he's meant to have, and hasn't done anything too special in preseason. I'd still want him since we're lean at the 1 and 2 and he could play both.

Why would you guys want Giles? I'd want a guard that could fill in the PG/SG hole (Farmar and Vujacic as sole backups, not counting any vet we sign later?) I know Ariza, Walton, even Odom could slide over, but those guys are better in the front court collecting rebounds and pushing it, which adds to our versatility.

Mihm, MBenga, Odom, Radmonavic, Powell, Walton are available to backup Bynum and Gasol.

Farmar and Vujacic are available to backup Fisher and Kobe.
