Even if Garrard wasn't signed today and he signed with the Fins just to spite the niners then most people wouldn't think twice about him leaving. Niners went to the NFC championship in spite of Smith, not because of him. And really, would the Fins be stupid enough to offer Smith a long term contract? Because that's what he wants and why he didn't sign the contract offered to him before anyone even knew the niners were looking at Manning. Niner fans want Alex Smith to sign here but only because he's a safe bet. I would rather the niners actually offer lower than what they originally offered him but hopefully not more than what was already on the table.
