Players fight in Hockey and knock each others teeth out and its encouraged as part of the event.
But thats the NHL's image. The NCAA likes to pretend it isnt actually burdened with child sex scandals, murder investigations, scholarship scams and embezzlement hearings. So they worry about the face of the league (the players) more than the back room things that occur.
Other than that they player was a dumb ass for saying what he said and using the thug life attitude.
If he woulda just defused the situation and said "my temper got the best of me, I was in the heat of the moment and I didnt make the decision I always hoped I would if put in that position and I'm sorry to my team, their team and the NCAA for that".
Then the entire fight woulda just been another fight. He would have had huge scout promotion and maybe interest. Instead he ghetto glorified his behavior and as commented previously made ALL athletes (not only black ones) look very immature.

"Love me or hate me it's one or the other. Always has been. Hate my game, hate my swagger, hate my fade-away, my hunger, hate that i'm a veteran, A champion, hate that. Hate it with all your heart, and hate that i'm loved for the exact same reasons." - Kobe
