Sources: Kevin McHale Will Interview With The Houston Rockets

By Adrian Wojnarowski

Kevin McHale will interview for the Houston Rockets coaching job, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

McHale, who had two different tenures as Minnesota Timberwolves coach and served as the franchise’s general manager, has been working as a television analyst for the past two years.

The Rockets and McHale are still working on setting a date for the meeting, presumably around McHale’s playoff broadcasting responsibilities, a source said.

Houston’s casting a wide net to find a replacement for Rick Adelman. GM Daryl Morey has a list of interview candidates that includes ex-Cavaliers coach Mike Brown, Dallas assistant Dwane Casey, Milwaukee assistant Kelvin Sampson, Washington assistant Sam Cassell(notes) and Houston assistant Jack Sikma.

McHale is expected to be in the running for the Boston Celtics coaching job, too, if Doc Rivers declines to sign a contract extension.

As head coach in 2005 and 2009 for the ‘Wolves, McHale had a 39-55 record.

The Rockets’ list of coaches to interview continued to grow Tuesday more rapidly than the team could begin checking them off.

The Rockets added a second champion-era star to their list of candidates, with plans to meet with Sam Cassell, an assistant with the Washington Wizards, next week.

They have his former teammate, Mario Elie, an assistant with the Sacramento Kings, scheduled for an interview today.

The Rockets also plan to set up an interview with Hall of Famer Kevin McHale, next week, Yahoo sports reported Tuesday.

McHale, long a Timberwolves general manager and briefly the coach, worked with the Rockets on several joint pre-draft camps.

The Rockets met with Bucks assistant coach Kelvin Sampson on Tuesday and are also scheduled to meet with Rockets assistant Jack Sikma today and former Hawks coach Mike Woodson on Thursday.

The Rockets also have expressed interest in New Orleans’ Michael Malone, Memphis’ Dave Joeger, Dallas’ Dwane Casey, Boston’s Lawrence Frank, San Antonio’s Mike Budenholzer, Philadelphia’s Quin Snyder and the Clippers’ Dean Demopoulos.

The Rockets also are interested in former Cavaliers coach Mike Brown.

Report: Kevin McHale Frontrunner For Rockets Job

Posted Image

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

With a strong, late push in the search process, Kevin McHale has emerged as the frontrunner for the Houston Rockets coaching vacancy, multiple league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday.

No final decision has officially been reached, nor are contract negotiations underway, but McHale has clearly separated himself from Dallas Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey and Boston Celtics assistant Lawrence Frank, sources said. McHale made a strong final impression in conversations with Houston officials on Thursday in Chicago, and could receive a formal offer in the next week.

The Rockets are still deliberating on different scenarios involving the three finalists, sources say, but McHale is the candidate to beat for the job. Rockets owner Les Alexander must still ultimately sign off on the recommendation of GM Daryl Morey and his front office staff.

McHale, an analyst for TNT, would need to come to agreement on financial terms and length of contract should an offer be made, but sources say he’s too anxious for a chance to coach to reject a deal.

McHale also met with Golden State officials about their coaching vacancy on Thursday.

Rockets To Retain Kevin McHale For 14-15
May 03, 2014 8:41 PM EDT

The Houston Rockets will retain Kevin McHale as head coach despite their first round exit to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Some in the media had previously reported that McHale may not survive a first round elimination, but the Rockets lost several extremely close games to the Blazers.

McHale has been head coach of the Rockets since the 11-12 NBA season.

Can confirm Houston Chronicle report that coach Kevin McHale will return next season.

Lionel Hollins would've been a better fit.

McHale is really just an average coach. If that team is going anywhere, the roster is what needs tweaking. I can't really blame him for anything.

I think they should trade Harden.

I don't think he did as bad of a job as people believe. Harden's not gonna play defense no matter who's the coach. Beverly isn't as awesome as ESPN makes him out to be. He got Lin playing some pretty good basketball.

All in all, that team is what it is. A first or second round knockout - never really in the mix with the elite teams. A great coach might have taken them further but I don't think he's the blame for all of their problems

That's not true, Harden can play defense (look at all his matchups against Kobe). He has all the tools to play D, he just doesn't.

What he needs is a coach who can fire him up and get him to buy in on that side of the ball, McHale obviously isn't that coach.
