Mihm Back and Healthy for Lakers

Posted: 10/5/2008 7:57:00 AM
Source: LA Times

There was a time when Chris Mihm was the Lakers' starting center, when he was athletic and mobile.

That was three years, three surgeries and countless frustrating moments ago.

Mihm is back healthy, his surgically repaired right ankle no longer an issue.

"I've been running around with a smile on my face," Mihm said. "That hasn't happened in two years."

Mihm, 29, missed the 2006-07 season and has played in just 82 games the last three seasons.

He twice had surgery on his right ankle, one reconstructive. He had surgery on his right heel. He underwent three weekly sonar-wave treatments last season and still felt persistent pain.

The screw placed in the ankle was removed in February, the first positive sign for Mihm.

He returned home to Austin, Texas, this summer and worked out at his alma mater, Texas , and found himself fit for the first time in years.

"I'm playing above the rim again, which is fun," Mihm said. "The last two years have been very frustrating for me, to say the least. Besides three surgeries, every time I've come back, I've been a shadow of the way I used to play."

Mihm averaged career highs in points (10.2) and minutes (26.1) as the starting center during the 2005-06 season. He played in 59 games before the ankle injury.

Each time Mihm tried to come back, he had been robbed of everything.

"Being an athletic player, someone that's used to moving and playing above the rim, I was just running around setting picks and I couldn't get my hands on balls," said Mihm, who is in the last year of a contract that pays him $2.5 million. "That made everything that much harder to take."

Seems like a good sign.

I think he'll be good playing behind Bynum (and probably Gasol). He's finally healthy and he's in a contract year, so he has added motivation to work even harder.

that Mihm [3 years ago]
could start on certain teams.

He would be great off the bench if healthy.

When he's 100% he can give a decent performance, so good luck and stay healthy Chris.

i'll believe it when i see it

but if true then we are in really good shape because if 100% he is the 2nd best back up center in the NBA behind joe prysibilla

his best year he averaged 10ppg 6rpg

if he can give us half of that we would be set

5ppg 3rpg in limited minutes would be unbelievable

I'm pretty sure I saw his parents at the WCF in San Antonio. Two older people, wearing Chris Mihm jerseys. Makes sense. I guess they live in Austin.

I knew he went to UT, but had thought he was from Wiconsin.

Have we? IIRC, his returns in the past were always filled with doubt and uncertainty. This is the first time I've heard of him so confident in his return. Yes, he may be saying all these things because his contract expires this year, but all the talk is useless if he doesn't show it on the court.

Actually, I thought Mihm did pretty well last night.
Uhmm.. he may be a little rusty though. BUt he looked good.
I'd still like to have him off the bench if he can stay healthy.
He was a lot better last night than we've seen in a long time.
So in a way, im kinda proud of him. he's come a long way.

Am I the only one not sold on everything yet?

People seem to be excited over small things like our backup C who has missed the last 2 years with 3 foot surgeries and who was no more than a back-up AT BEST and was extremely FOUL PRONE even when he DID get major minutes...

Did I miss anything?

Wake me when Kobe / Gasol / Bynum are clicking on all cylinders...until then, we aren't even a lock to get home court...and we shouldn't even be THINKING about the FINALS yet.

Calm down people...calm down.

Better to be optimistic then pessimistic^

So no one HAS to "calm down".

I'm not really sold at all... 10/6 at best as a starter, and that was when he was completely healthy... dude was a foul waiting to happen too...

Finesse player with foot problems... at this point I would be happy with 6 fouls...
