what's a "personal conversation" notification? what's a "reputation"? more importantly, what do i do with them when i receive them?

Welcome to TLN!
A personal conversation notification is part of the PM system on TLN where you basically can send private messages to other members. Reputation is like a +1 or a like on something you post, it's just a feature that's there for fun. If someone PMs you, you can respond and have a private convo or whatever, while reputation just stays there and you can see your total rep points on your profile page.
