Ask anyone who has a iPad & they'll tell you they LOVE it. I guess that's the case with all Apple products though...

I like the trends... oh I have an ipod, the nano is cute and tiny, let's spend money on that even though it's the same thing. Oh look I have an ipod touch but the ipad is a huge version, bigger is better, lemme get that......

I have tried out both, and they are both great, but there is no beating that pretty ios that apple runs. The herotab is cheaper, and does the same stuff, but with all the apps and everything combined, I would definitely choose the ipad.
But I would wait to but the second gen just like most people are saying here. It will have facetime and skype etc.... along with more processing power to run iworks apps like pages and keynote.
However, if you are planning on jailbreaking it, you may want to grab one now, since it may be a while before they come out with a jailbreak for the second gen ios ipad software.
