Don't have to do much unless you need to with Microsoft Essentials. Just set when you want your PC scanned weekly, and it'll do for you...automatic updates the spyware definitions, etc. Havent had a problem with this at all. Before I used Windows Live One Care but they stopped making that and now there's Microsoft Essentials

Since we've installed it at work (and me at home) we've had no viruses, worms, trojans or anything of the like.
Use Firefox as well and get the "No Script" and "AdBlock Plus" add-ons. You have to give permission to sites, but in the long run it works like a charm.

if you're inexperienced w/ the internet, and are looking to avoid viruses, here's a couple of rules to get you started -
if you don't know where a link is taking you, don't click it
if you can't tell by the address or the subject who sent you the e-mail and what its about, don't bother opening it
if something pops up randomly and tells you that you won something, you didn't, X the window if possible
if you get pop ups that try to force you to click something before you can X their window, ctrl+alt+del, go to the processes tab and kill (end process) on firefox.exe, iexplorer.exe, etc...
do that, and mix in some cheap/free anti-virus and you should be fine
