Major UK retailer, John Lewis, believes that there'll be a substantial refresh of the iPod Touch this coming September 2010. Speaking at the company's Christmas look-ahead event in London, Rob Hennessey, buyer audio and telecomms, outlined the major features that the device is likely to carry, based on information given to him from suppliers.
The main new add-ons will be an improved 5-megapixel camera with a flash, that can shoot HD video, the adoption of the same sort of accelerometer and gyroscope found in the iPhone 4, and FaceTime calling over Wi-Fi.
He also believes that Apple will very much target the new iPod as a multimedia device for kids and teenagers.
His entire predictions are as follows (as per the presentation):
- Likely to be sold as a multimedia device targeted at youth / kids
- Improved 5-megapixel camera so can shoot HD video / upload to YouTube. And flash so it can take photos in the dark
- Social networking
- Accelerometer and gyroscope, significant in developing the gaming credentials of the product
- FaceTime calling over Wi-Fi, so can communicate with friends for zero cost

I got the green light to update my iPhone. Don't want to buy a 32 for 299 when I could get a 64 for 299.

Gaming now on par with Iphone 4 as well & the same top of the line processor for quicker speeds and longer battery life? YES!!!
The retina display? 4 times better graphics than the previous ipod version and on line with the IPhone 4? YES!!!
Facetime's alright, rather have it than not... cool for it to be there I suppose, but I don't see myself using it any time soon at least not for now... in the future, perhaps it becomes bigger and I make more use of it as more & more people slowly start to get it & use it as well..
Definitely getting it. Was initially gonna' get the previous version a while back (like 4-6 months ago), but returned it like right away before ever even opening it just thinking damn it you know what? New one's almost gonna' come out, better just wait, it'll have some definite improvements and honestly, obviously as usual, not all the rumors came to fruition (not surprising at all), but I just kinda thought the worst of it, that they'd add as little new things as possible and well, they added more and I'm VERY HAPPY.
Of course, would've loved most for that 3g rumor to come to fruition, but I knew that sounded way too good to be true anyway, since that could very well hurt Iphone 4 sales for people not wanting the phone aspect but just wireless internet and thus paying less or not getting into as hassle-some a contract with AT&T, but ehh... wi-fis better than nothing.. and as time goes by, it keeps appearing in more & more places. I realize it's a pain sometimes just trying to get a connection & get on for various reasons, but just the fact alone, that I can get on it at my house and be on the little sucker surfing the web, using facebook, youtube, etc.. while in my room before going to bed or etc.. that's pretty awesome.
Gaming will be fun as well.
I'll place the order a little later on Amazon. Possibly tomorrow, possibly some other day, but they are not expected to be in people's hands at the very earliest until September 10th.
I currently still have an old Ipod Video 30GB. The first one of that series that ever came out. Black one. So as you all can imagine, I will be upgrading big time to say the least.
Going at the 64 GB version this time though. Not so much for music cause 32 gbs is more than good enough for me since I fill at max about 25-26 gigs, but I do wanna' start filling this sucker up with a lot of HD video recordings as well as just putting all sorts of other videos into it as well.

I would think they would revamp the music player UI this time around. Not that there's anything wrong with it before, but it could be a bit more stylish.
About the facetime, can you use it with other Skype & Yahoo!/Microsoft Messenger users? And when can we see Apple providing the 3G network like it did to the iPad on the touch? I'd love to have that without AT&T's contract.

thats because..... the iPod touch 4's camera is meant for video & facetime not for photos. its like all camcorders.. they shoot good videos but take crappy photos.
