Despite everyone’s fears that the pervasive love for His Airness’s would boost him and B.J. Armstrong ahead of Magic Johnson and Byron Scott in a popularity contenst, the ‘88-89 Showtime Lakers topped the ‘92-93 Bulls according to your votes, 39-36 to be the definitive Best Backcourt of the Last 20 Years.
Props to everyone who actually read through the rules, which clearly stated that this wasn’t a two-on-two battle. In fact, we were judging the best backcourt within the context of a team game, a full five-on-five run. And with that, it makes sense that Magic and Scott took the crown. At that point in his career, Magic dominated games without needing to score, finding his teammates for buckets when they didn’t even know that they were open. And that ‘88-89 season was the second-best over the entirety of Scott’s career.
No insult to Michael, but after all, maybe there are some contests that he wouldn’t win.
