Just got word the Lakers inked DJ Mbenga to a deal. The terms weren't immediately announced- BK was at a presser for Sun Yue earlier today and didn't hear any specifics- but we're both guessing it's a partially guaranteed deal. Then again, that's also us spit balling on the fly, so don't treat it as the gospel. If we learn more, we'll toss it your way.

So what does this development mean in terms of the opening day roster, which Mitch Kupchak previously indicated would be kept at 14? Well, it could mean somebody like Coby Karl went from "hopeful" to "long shot." It could mean that Mbenga is being kept around for insurance during camp while the front office gets proof positive that Andrew Bynum and Chris Mihm are in the pink. Or we could see October 28th's season opener feature a 15-strong lineup and Karl and Mbenga riding deals not fully guaranteed, which leaves the team options as the season progresses. Either way, some fans have wondered about Mbenga's status, so there you have it.

Made my day. :hysterical2:

Mbenga has the ability to develop into a very solid backup C.

A tall camp indeed. Powell (6'10), Giles(6'11), Odom (6'10), Vlad (6'10), Mihm (7'0), Mbenga (7'0), Gasol(7'0), Bynum(7'1), Ariza (6'8), Sun Yue (6'9), Luke (6'8), Sasha (6'7), Kobe (6'7), ...

The shortest ones are Fisher (6'0) and Farmar (6'2). Crawford, Karl, Heath, and Mitchel are all around 6'4-6'5.

I have not seen a Laker training camp roster like this yet... in terms of players' height that is.

I thought Kobe is 6'6"? Hopefully the Lakers take advantage of all this height they have.

Well, Kobe is shrinking ...

I emember when he first join the Lakers, he was listed as 6'8 ...

Then a few years later, he was listed as 6'7...

I just checked the ESPN and indeed he is listed now as 6'6

But hey the point is still true ...

What's great about Mbenga is that he can also play PF. :D

Great asset! A better replacement for Ronny.

Now, he's gonna have a full season with the team. An ample time to mesh and get adjusted to his teammates' games could elevate his confidence.

He has that jump shot from mid-range.

I wonder why his minutes shrank during the Finals?

Why Phil thrust Mihm into paint instead of this defensive force.

Why Phil???

And why leave Newble, the defensive specialist, on the bench when you desperately needed someone who could neutralize Paul Pierce???

Why PHIL?????

WHY?!?!?!?!

Why? because they suck. because they wouldn't have made a difference in the finals anyways (you're delusional if you believe otherwise). Newble and Mbenga were insurance policies, they'd get time in the event that our real players got injured, or if we're blowing out a team, they'd play to give our real players rest.

He's going to have the same role as last year behind Bynum, Gasol, and Mihm. He'll play garbage time, and garbage time only. Barely got any playing time with just Gasol. Now that Bynum is back, and Mihm is finally healthy, his already barely existent playing time will decrease even more.

^ I tell you the truth, Newble even shot a greater percentage than Walton did.

And he defends better than anyone else on the team not named Kobe.

I don't know why you brought up Luke Walton and shooting percentage, but...

2007-2008
FG%
Walton: 45%
Newble: 43.7%
3P%
Walton: 33.3%
Newble: 32.7%
PPG:
Walton: 7.2
Newble: 3.8

Their career percentages are nearly identical.
