Trosel Flores gave the first official report of the crime to Globovisi├│n at 11:00 am, where he confirmed the death of his wife, who received three stab wounds in different parts of her body.

Edwin Valero, the talented yet troubled former WBC lightweight champion, confessed to killing his wife on Sunday and was taken into police custody, according to judicial authorities in Caracas, Venezuela.

Valero, who was on a possible collision course with superstar Manny Pacquiao, was arrested after police found the corpse of his wife at the InterContinental hotel in the city of Valencia, according to Venezuelan Federal Police Chief Wilmer Flores.

According to reports, Valero (27-0, 27 knockouts) left the hotel around daybreak and allegedly told security staff there he murdered Jennifer Carolina Viera de Valero, whose age has been been reported as 20 and 24 in differing dispatches.

Police later discovered three stab wounds on her body
. Valero was taken to a police precinct "where we are headed to take samples needed for the investigation of the case," Flores reportedly told a state television station.

"Valero went down to a hotel reception and confessed to the employees that he had carried out the murder," the attorney-general's office said in a statement.

This is not the first time that Valero, a superstar in his native Venezuela, has had brushes with the law in matters concerning his wife. In March, he was charged with harassing his wife and threatening hospital officials who were caring for her. His wife was being treated for cracked ribs and a punctured lung, ailments that Valero's lawyer explained as being the result of her falling down a flight of steps at their home.

Valero has battled substance abuse problems and on March 28, he entered a rehab clinic in Venezuela to treat apparent dependencies on alcohol and drugs and to deal with anger issues.

Valero rose to prominence by setting a record for consecutive first-round knockouts (18) to start his career in 2006, a record that has since been broken by the Philly fighter Tyrone Brunson. Valero won the WBA super featherweight title with a tenth-round TKO against Vicente Mosquera on August 5, 2006, and he defended it four times. He vacated the belt in 2008 to move up to a higher weight class and quickly won the WBC lightweight title but again vacated it in an attempt to move up in weight yet again. His ultimate goal was to challenge Pacquiao.

In 2001, Valero fractured his skull in a motorcycle accident and his medical status made it difficult for him to fight in the U.S. Still, his health issues were clearing up and Valero was tentatively scheduled to fight again over the summer, perhaps on a premium cable network, according to Carl Moretti, VP of Top Rank, which promotes Valero.

"His career inside the ring was on its way up," said Moretti, who was in Atlantic City on Saturday as another Top Rank star Kelly Pavlik lost to Sergio Martinez. "Maybe he was headed to a potential fight with Manny Pacquiao. But more importantly, issues outside the ring we're bringing him down. When you have someone who's dealing with demons, it keeps going until something like this eventually happens."

Edwin Valero Commits Sucide in his Jail Cell. :nah:

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Venezuela - It has been confirmed in Valencia that Edwin "El Inca" Valero took his life in the early morning hours in the cells of the Carabobo Police. Valero had been arrested after his wife Jennifer Carolina was found dead at the Hotel Intercontinental in Valencia early Sunday morning

The head of the CICPC (Office of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations), Wilmer Flores, said the fighter was hanged in his cell, with his own clothes, and the body was spotted by another inmate, who gave notice to police officials.

Flores said that when the Valero was found, officials said he still had vital signs but they could not save him.

For quite some time, the fighter had been battling alcoholism and psychological issues. On Sunday, his wife was found dead in their hotel room with three stab wounds. Valero made a confession to the murder shortly after it happened. He was taken, without incident, to a police station in Carabobo.

"Edwin Valero went down to hotel reception and made a confession that he killed his wife, so the hotel staff immediately called police, who later confirmed the death in the room," said the general director of the CICPC to BoxingScene.com on Sunday.

According to sources close to the family, Valero had been under the influence of alcohol when he and his wife left Merida in a rented van to travel to Valencia. They arrived at the hotel at 11:30 pm on Saturday. At 5:30 am, Valero told the reception that he killed his wife.

On March 25, Valero had been arrested by the commission and prosecutors of the CICPC at the Hospital Universitario in Merida, after assaulting his wife. The wife was admitted to the facility with multiple injuries. The charges were later dropped after his wife had claimed the injuries occured from falling down a flight of stairs. Last September, there were claims the fighter had attacked his mother and sister in a drunken rage, which the fighter later denied.

Family and friends were trying to place him in a rehab center after the fighter told them he was unable to stop drinking. Earlier this month he was scheduled to spend 30-days at rehab center in Cuba, but Valero missed his flight after he was involved in a car accident while under the influence of alcohol.

Valero Denied The Murder, Relatives Reveal Dark Secrets

Venezuela - Relatives from both sides of the family, are speaking about the tragic events which took place over the last two days. Undefeated boxer Edwin Valero (27-0, 27KOs) was arrested early Sunday morning for the murder of his wife, Jennifer Carolina. Valero took his own life on Monday morning in a jail cell in Carabobo. The head of the CICPC (Office of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations), Wilmer Flores, issued a statement that Valero hung himself using his own clothes. Valero still had vital signs when they cut him down but they couldn't save him.

Valero's wife was found dead in a hotel room in Valencia with three stab wounds.

Kenya Finol, the cousin of the wife, says Valero made call after the wife had been killed, and claimed she was murdered by underworld thugs.

"When he called, he sounded like he was drugged. In a real quiet tone, he said Jennifer was dead in a hotel room in Valencia, and that she had been killed by some thugs who had been pursuing them," Kenya Finol said.

The story Valero gave to his wife's family, was the exact story Valero gave to police in Carabobo, according to a source who was present in the police station.

"I did not kill her. We were being pursued by some thugs and they killed her," Valero was quoted as saying by the source.

Valero would also tell police that he was very high on drugs and could not remember exactly what happened. He remembered finding his wife's body, but he couldn't remember much of anything else or how she was killed.

Jennifer Carolina's uncle, Evelio Finol, said Valero did not go crazy overnight. He described him as a very violent person who had the entire family living in fear. Nobody was willing to say anything against him because the fighter had political backing. More revealing was the entire family keeping quiet while Valero was forcing his wife to take drugs.

The uncle's story rings true when comparing the recent events. Valero had recently beaten his wife, causing multiple injuries that sent her to the hospital on March 27. The wife, along with family, sweeped the beating under the rug by telling police the injuires were caused a slip and fall accident on a flight of stairs. Because of their story, charges were dropped against Valero and he was released from police custody.

"[We never said anything because] we were threatened with death. We have to take the blame for what happened [for not speaking up earlier], but so do the authorities of this country and President Hugo Chávez. Because Valero was an athlete, he received preferential treatment, so they too are responsible for what happened," Evelio Finol said.

"Jennifer's death can not go unpunished. If he would have been sent to mental hospital, they would have said he wasn't crazy. He was keeping Jennifer on drugs since January when they lived in Caracas. He forced her to take them, or else he would have killed her, her children and her mother. During the ten years of marriage, she was always under threat of death."

Eloiza Vivas, the mother of Edwin Valero, blames the legal system of Venezuela. She says the system failed her son, who was very ill from over a decade of drug and alcohol abuse.

"The authorities of this country are responsible for everything. It's true that I have to take the blame for not saying anything, but Edwin was very ill. He was using drugs since age 18 and drank a lot," said Eloiza Vivas.

There are now conspiracy theories in Venezuela that Valero was so high from a combination of drugs and alcohol, that he may have mistakenly killed his wife during a extreme hallucination and once the high wore off and he began to realize what had happened, he took his own life.
