I'm trying to help out my parents business a little bit recently, and a lot of what I'm doing is trying to get them higher on Google searches (i.e. trying to get the Search engine optimized). So far, I have written some articles and submitted free online press releases, as well as added them to Yellow Pages, Yelp, and some smaller directories. It's very tempting to use some of the paid directories, such as Yahoo and/or Business.com (which have VERY high page ranks), but those are pretty expensive (i.e. $600 a year to be listed) Any advice from website owners or anyone else in the know on this subject would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Niche words/phrases.

If you try to corner the SE market for single words, especially highly searched ones... forget it. Unless you have $$$, you won't pull it off. Google has a tool, that you can search single/multi word(s) and it will return related results and the number of times, those words/phrases are searched past and current. You're looking for words and phrases that are searched between 2,000-10,000 times per month.

Once you have your list of words/phrases, do manual searches on them and see the competition. How are their meta tags and titles set up? What's the word count on their main page? Are they utilizing link backs (linking to other sites/businesses - you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours).

With just a little effort, you can be on the 1st page for several words/phrases and greatly increase your traffic. Plus, hook up with related businesses and do link backs. The more pages linking to your business, the higher score Google and other search engines will give you.

Well.

First of all your site must be SEO - Friendly, so no Flash.
Meta description, keywords studied, all the images must have alt attributes, the site must be written with a valid code etc etc.
Build a sitemap.xml and submit it to all the search engines, build a robots.txt.
The technical part is very important.

Then for the search engine part, you have to know that Google works with an algorythm of popularity + keywords connection.
This means that to reach higher Google positioning your site must have a good page rank and appropriate keywords.
Submit your site to Google, submit it to all the public directories, public articles with links on Technorati, Digg, Delicious etc etc.

Could you link your site so I can see what are its problems?

Thanks to both of you guys - That's a lot of very useful knowledge that will be very helpful to me. Marco, please check your inbox for the URL (I don't want to broadcast too much of my personal life on here).

With that being said, we sell printing machines, copiers, etc. and so, some of what I want to target, as far as keywords, are Used Canon Copiers - We are currently on page 2 of Google for that (moved up from page 3 after some SEO work by myself), and Used copiers, which we are on page 14/15 (moved up a little bit, as well) - The latter (used copiers) would be just awesome to achieve the 1st/2nd page on Google for. I have webworldindex and dmoz pending approval - It would be nice to get them, but I think I might have to wait a very, very long time. The funny thing is, though, that an average sale would more than cover the costs of probably a dozen high page rank directories for a year, (including yahoo and business.com) but it just seems like SO much money to put forward at once.

I think that I'll also write 2 or 3 additional different articles about my subject matter, and slowly distribute to press release sites, article sites, etc.
