What I understood from his reasoning was....
He had some injuries in the mid 90's he couldnt shake. I think it was his foot and knee.
The Oakland A's trainer gave him a substance that he knew contained a steroid but wasnt banned by the league at the time.
He used it to help heal up.
Then after he healed he stopped taking it and began having serious migraines, back strains, spasms and even spinal problems.
Then he had some financial problems. He was almost broke because of massive debts.
So he had to play to pay the bills and get his life back on track so he kept taking the roids so he wouldnt have/feel his back problems.
Then he started getting bigger. Breaking records and the substance he used was banned by the league.
Thats a tough call. If I was in his position I would have probably kept using it to.
I dont count his records AR (after roids) as credible, nor do I Bonds, Sosas, etc.
But Mark still hit 49 HR's as a rookie (record) in 1987 and is still the only player to hit 30 HR's in each of his first 5 seasons in the bigs.
So that would have been 1987-1991 when he was still clean and skinny.
I remember his injuries in 93 and 94. His career BOX SCORES back that up to. In 93 he played 27 games and in 94 he played 47 and 1995 he played 104. He said he began roids in "the mid 90's". I bet he started using the roids in late 94 or early 95 seasons and was using them fulltime during the 96 season.
He is right that steroids didn't help his eye and hand coordination but it did help him get bigger and stronger. I have to admire him for one thing, he didn't lie under oath like some others. It made him look bad though. Steroids weren't illegal in mlb and I think he thought he wasn't doing anything wrong. All records in that era are tainted. McGuire, Bonds, Clemens. etc... even Alex Rodriguez if he gets the home run record.
