In news first reported by FirstCuts’ Rich “MaZe" Lopez late last night, we have confirmation from a source at Reebok that Los Angeles Clippers point guard Baron Davis is leaving the brand for Chinese apparel maker Li Ning.
Davis becomes the second big-name point guard this offseason to leave a U.S. footwear maker for a Chinese company. Jason Kidd, days after winning the gold medal in Beijing, joined Peak in favor of Nike.
Li Ning, the company, is named after the famous Chinese gynmnast of the same name. If he sounds familiar, it’s because he lit the torch at the opening ceremony earlier this year. Li Ning's footwear roster also includes Shaquille O’Neal. There was plenty of Li Ning gear on display during the recent Beijing Games. Spain's team, led by Pau Gasol, wore Li Ning uniforms. If anything the move for Davis at least comes as less of a shock than Kidd's to Peak because of Li Ning's established reputation.
