First computer was actually a Posted Image

However, I've primarily been a DOS (back to 5.0) and Windows user all these years.

Currently I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a 3 year old Sony Vaio 1.6 GHz Duo, 2 GB RAM. XP ran like crap... Windows 7 runs like a dream. Fast, smooth and slick.

Given my current medical condition, not sure I want to fork over $100-200 for it, though.

So I've got a full drive backup of my old XP. I can go back to it, at any time

Now, I've been contemplating switching to Ubuntu. There's the obvious trepidation though, as I've got the usual concern that most people have, when switching to Linux based systems: Compatibility

Anyone with any feedback/problems/issues they've had, in making the switch?

I know there's a few Ubuntu users on here. Wish they'd give some input.

I know for a fact, you can use some Windows programs with Ubuntu. Have you looked into Wine?

I too was planning to "dive-in" to Ubuntu, but didn't because of fear from being not compatible with other softwares. Plus, I'm actually ok with Windows right now. They say Ubuntu is great, but from what I'm seeing, I'm not really into open-sourced software, and customizing my OS is really not my thing, unless I was a programmer. I like it user-friendly; just pop it, load it, use it. If you really want to go with the dive, dive in slowly and take precautions while getting familiar with all the new interface, codecs and terminal commands.

Thanks for the input. Still running the Windows 7... but still debating the Ubuntu switch.

Yes, its Linux based.

I like Windows 7, but I'm tired of everything being pirated and I'm certainly not going to pay for it, nor in the position to pay for it. Ubuntu is free and easy.

Then this article pops up on my home page today. While, I'm tech savvy enough, to not have had to pay for a single piece of software in probably the last 15 years or so... this article just kind of pounded home, my previous point.

So I downloaded the lastest version of Ubuntu, mounted it to a disc (using PowerISO)... booted and it atually gives you an option of running it off the CD (w/o installing) so you can get a feel of what it is. Granted, it runs slow off your CD drive, but nonetheless, it still impressed me.

Once I get some backups of passwords and such, I'm going to be making the switch. I've got an OEM Windows 7 disc, which if worse comes to worse, I can still install it.... but I'd really like to give this Ubuntu a try. I've been reading reviews and its very highly rated. I'll give a full report, once I am up and running.

How come you switched? The newest version, released late last month, is getting rave reviews.

I am now... Ubuntu Man!

Running well, so far. Had to do one update, that kind of confused me, so I could start adding programs, but a simple Google search cleared that up. The interface to add programs, is sweet. Everything right there, in a program called Ubuntu Software Center. Select the category you want, then scroll thru your choices.

I'm liking it. Probably won't have a real feel for it however, until I start building my site. There's a free html editor, but I think its just a line editor (which I'm used to). Plus, I need to check out the image editing software.

As far as I know, using a program called "Wine", you can run almost any Windows-based program on Ubuntu, DR. I've installed Wine, but haven't had a need to use it yet. I've been browsing the Ubuntu Software Center and I haven't found it lacking for anything I might ever need, so far.

I really, really like this OS so far. And it can't be said, enough... its ALL FREE. Also, I don't know anything about the previous versions... but this latest (9.10) has supposedly really raised the bar

Don't know anything about Mac software. Haven't used it in probably 20+ years. Search Google for CS4 Mac version Ubuntu.
