It appears the Lakers' NBA title and the Dodgers' second consecutive playoff appearance has done a lot for Los Angeles as far as the Sporting News is concerned.

The magazine has released its rankings of the nation's top sports cities and Los Angeles was No. 5 on the list -- a jump of three spots over its 2008 ranking.

"The Lakers' bringing home the NBA title was the story in L.A., but look at what Joe Torre accomplished with the Dodgers and what the college landscape -- football and basketball -- has looked like there over the past 12 months," said Bob Hille, Sporting News' chief of correspondents.

As the cover indicates, Pittsburgh was named the top sports city thanks to the Steelers' Super Bowl triumph and the Penguins' Stanley Cup victory.

Philadelphia is No. 2, Boston No. 3 and Chicago No. 4. Los Angeles/Anaheim was named the best sports city in America in 2003. Here's this year's full list.

Penguins? do they even count? I thought we only focus on major sports? It's like saying OOOH our semi-pro soccer team won the Southwest regional honorary runner-up.

i wouldnt knock hockey, i think they have the best fans.

game 7 stan cup finals. whole 3rd q everyone was up on their feet going insane, it was never silent. it was a soccer style crowd. i could only wish LA fans would get that insane for their sports.

We should be Number 3 without a question and Chicano I have no idea why Chicago is ahead of us. Maybe their MLS team won something? lol. Damn haters.

LA isn't that great of a sports town compared to many of those... There's just tons of people. Those guys in the East are obsessed with every sport team in there city.

Exactly. LA made it on there without a team from America's #1 sport. Imagine once it gets an NFL team...

Well lets imagine a couple years after that because it will most likely be a really bad team for a few years lol

Half of the cities there with NFL teams aren't very good. The Vikings appear to be the frontrunner in moving to LA,
and they're 10-2 this season.

I'm a Charger fan so if the Vikings moved here I would be kinda upset lulz

If Chargers came though OMG THAT WOULD BE PERFECT FOR ME.
