This could've been the series finale. Felt everything run full circle.
Where do they go from here?

For me the season started out great and then faded. I started losing interest as the season went on and that's the first time that's happened.

Yes.I thought the finale sucked. LaGuerta should have ended up on Dexter's table and I was extremely disappointed that it didn't happen. I felt her character deserved a better ending really.

Laguerta dying make Deb captain?

I thought it was brilliant to turn the tables. All season long Dexter has questioned whether he is who he is or not. Hence the entire episode about Hannah ripping him for the "Dark Passenger" bit. It's a perfect ending that Dexter hesitated. All year long he hedged on whether he was doing the right thing at the right time.
And Deb did too.
Now they both made a huge mistake and have to find a way to get out of it, suffer from it, or go on the run from it together. And Deb's reaction to shooting her, running over to her like that, incredibly genuine and totally heartfelt. Jennifer Carpenter was excellent this season too.
Perfect ending, to a great season.

And I agree about Jennifer Carpenter. She really deserves some recognition for her work this season.

Rumor has it now that the producers will not confirm if this is the last season. They said they have an "endgame in place", but gave no confirmation as to when it will take place. Due to the huge ratings last season got, some in the industry are saying they might extend it to 9 seasons now.
