How about Lamar Odom as one of the NBA’s top sixth man of the year candidates for the 2008-2009 season?

It’s not as farfetched as it seems. One of the ideas being pitched around, as the Lakers prepare for training camp, is to have Odom come off the bench, playing starter-type minutes in the mode of San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili.

It would take a period of adjustment, since Odom has been a starter fromthe first day of his NBA career, starting with the Clippers, then with the Miami Heat and now with the Lakers.

However, the move could be very beneficial for Odom, who could assess just what would be needed from him once he entered the game.

Because Odom prides himself on being an unselfish, all-around player, coming off the bench could turn out to be the ideal role for him.

even though I love LO as a starter, sometimes our bench kinda lags like in the finals, it would be nice to have a distributor off the bench to help the scoring, then Ariza is a more natural fit at SF . But I doubt this will happen.

Does that mean Ariza will be starting? I hope it's not Luke or Radman. :D

Wouldn't mind seeing Ariza start at SF, and having LO come off the bench at PF.
not a horrible idea.

you guys forget that the Lakers considered this last year too, and nothing came of it.

Lamar at the 3 CAN work. he just needs to be involved in pick and rolls as the ball handler.

This is going to be the theme for this team this season - versatility.

I really think with Bynum back in the fold Lamar will excel in any role they put him in now that there is absolutely no pressure on him to carry the team at any time.

When did the Lakers say they were thinking of moving LO to the bench? You don't bring a $14M player off the bench.

 @ Ariza starting. People need to stop overrating this fool. His defense is overrated, he can't stay healthy for a full season, he doesn't have a consistent J, ect...

Ariza wouldn't start even if the Lakers decided to move Odom to the bench. Phil would start his own son at SF before Ariza and Vlad.

I'm all for it if Lamar is willing. I think his effectiveness off the bench will hinge primarily on Lamar's happiness with his role. If he embraces the sixth man position like Manu, I think the sky is the limit for him as a bench player. He has to realize that it's not a 'bench' role, but more of a starter role who has his minutes delayed; as if he starts the game 5 minutes later than everyone else.
