Okay so it's been on for a few hours and I was playing Madden for about 30 minutes and then the circle goes red first 1 quadrant than two and then three. I unplug the Xbox for 5 minutes and turn it back on it's all back to normal or so I thought. Twenty minutes later it goes red again so I just unplugged it. I'm not sure what to do. I hope I don't have the red rings of death.

Leave it to cool down for some time. Start it up as per normal and see if it will occur. If it occurs too frequently, get it exchanged.

I'm fortunate to have my 360 well ventilated and place in an open place. I never got the 3ROD. =/

Disconnect everything, the power brick and all that ish, for at least an hour, then try again. If that don't work then that RROD just killed you. I'm going strong on I think my 4th 360....

Even if your M$ warranty ran out, call em and say you got the RROD. If they say you're out of luck, complain a lot, say you were loyal to M$ and a manufacture defect [expletive]ed up the system and not you and it's all on them and ask to speak to someone in charge and all that and they should let you send it in for a new one. I'm just guessing though since I've never done that, I had a Best Buy warranty so I just walked in and got a new 360.

Yeah I have mine standing vertical on the carpet. I should probably get a stand or put it on something. Our AC is also messed up for some reason so it's hotter than usual in the house so both of those things could have had some effect to it overheating. I unplugged the brick and the harddrive and let it cool down for an hour when I came back I felt it and it was cool so I plugged it back in and it worked fine for about an hour (I went to bed so I'm not sure if it's totally fixed or if it didn't have enough time to overheat again) my brother got the RROD and it took Microsoft a month or longer to finally send him a new one.

If you bought it within the last 3 years you are still under warranty. Either call Microsoft and ask for a repair or do it through the web site.

service.xbox.com/

Also one time I had passed my 3 year warranty it didn't let me go through the site so I called they asked me when I bought it and I lied and said it was later then I did and they believe me and didn't ask any questions. They sent me a shipping label to send it in for free through UPS. Sometimes they also send you the box but last time I did it they just sent me the label.

My brother did the xclamp thing on his xbox since he wouldn't be able to repair it with MS works great. Worse case if you are ever out of warranty do the xclamp thing to fix it yourself.

You don't need to spend money on a stand. If it was horizontal on the carpet then the carpet may be blocking the vents but vert is ok. The brick being on a thick carpet might affect overheating, but getting the RROD probably isn't your fault at all, just [expletive]ting manufacturing.

Call up M$
