I've been playing the 2k series since the dream cast days. This has by far been the dominant basketball franchise over the years. And 2k8 is my favirote game. So let's make a thread dedicated by 2k9! As most of us know, KG will be donning the cover of this year's title.

NBA 2K9 taps KG for cover
Take-Two reveals Boston Celtic Kevin Garnett as celeb spokesman for hoops game as NBA Finals get underway.

By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jun 5, 2008 6:00 pm PT

With the Boston Celtics facing the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals tonight, 2K Sports announced just prior to tip-off that one of the sport's biggest stars would grace the cover of NBA 2K9 this fall.

Posted Image

Celtics power forward Kevin Garnett will front copies of the latest hoops sim from Visual Concepts and offer his input to the development team as it implements unspecified new features and upgrades to the long-running series. As with last year's edition, the game will appear on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360.

An 11-time All-Star and 2008 Defensive Player of the Year, Garnett is one of Boston's "Big Three" along with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. His nearly $24 million salary made him the highest-paid player in the league this year, but a championship earned against the Celtics' biggest rival would go a long way to justifying every penny of it.

There have been rumors of EA trying to buyout 2k:

EA's Take-Two bid FTC compliant, no action before 8/21

Federal regulatory body says megapublisher has submitted required information on proposed purchase of rival; further extension puts next step six weeks away.

The great game-industry saga of 2008 continued today with the next step in Electronic Arts' protracted takeover attempt of Take-Two Interactive. In a filing this morning with the Securities and Exchange Commission, EA announced that it was "in substantial compliance" with the Federal Trade Commission's information requests.

Early last month, the FTC had requested additional information to ensure that the proposed buyout--which turned hostile in March--did not violate US antitrust laws. Some concerns had been raised because the deal would see EA Sports' sole major rival, 2K Sports, subsumed into EA's multibillion-dollar organization.

According to a recent earnings report, 2K Sports is losing money despite holding exclusive third-party publishing rights to Major League Baseball. EA has a complete monopoly on all major licensed football games, including NFL, NCAA, and Arena leagues, as well as the sole rights for FIFA-branded soccer games. Both companies develop and publish NHL hockey and NBA basketball games, although 2K recently let its NCAA College Hoops license lapse.

As a result of today's FTC announcement, EA's $2 billion bid for Take-Two will continue beyond its previously announced July 18 deadline. Although the Redwood City, California-headquartered company today promised no action until August 21, its offer currently stands at $25.74 per share of Take-Two stock, which was trading at $24.26 on the NASDAQ as of press time. Despite the fact that the offer would now earn its shareholders a profit, Take-Two's board has repeatedly and vociferously refused EA's advances, citing record-shattering sales of Grand Theft Auto IV as proof that the company would fare better on its own.

Here are some first impressions of 2k9 from the recent E3 event:

NBA 2K9 (Hands-Off) First Look

How much can you truly write about after watching a one-minute trailer, and a single two-minute quarter demo? Well not much really. But I know OS (and most people in general) love NBA 2K and so I can at least provide a few 2K9 crumbs for now.

Mark Thomas, VP of sports development at Visual Concepts, basically said that this year he wants consumers to be blown away by the NBA 2K experience from start to finish. What that means? Who knows -- it was a very coy remark to make after all.

What I did notice during my time watching the two-minute demo though was that the graphics look even better, and are locked in at a solid 60 frames per second. Kevin Garnett was on the free-throw line at one point (the demo was Lakers vs. Celtics at the Staples Center) and he looked simply incredible. Overall it just seems like that added layer of polish has been added to the graphics, removing the somewhat plastic-textured skin of the last few years.

Also the announcing team will be getting revamped, as now Clark Kellogg, who does a lot of college basketball coverage on CBS, will be taking over for Kenny "The Jet" Smith on color commentary.

Finally at the end of the quarter, I did see a new presentation element: After the end-of-quarter whistle, some of the best highlights from the quarter played automatically. The highlights were shown from a cinematic camera view, and there was an orchestral-type score playing over the highlights. Now the two-minute demo didn't have too many eventful moments so the highlights were ho-hum; but, if the game is actually able to recognize the best moments from a quarter and play them on screen after a quarter, that's a fantastic new presentation element.

Biggest Positive: Doesn't seem like Visual Concepts is messing with something that isn't broken.

Biggest Negative: I didn't get to play the game.

Biggest Question: The gameplay in NBA 2K8 was already rock solid, but will there be a new mode this year, or will the Association Mode at least be refined and improved?

E3 '08: NBA 2K9 First Look

2K’s presentation of NBA 2K9 was short, to say the least. The new executive producer on the game, Jeff Thomas explained that the game was still in development and many bugs still required attention. As a result, 2K is holding off on announcing the new features to dawn this year’s game until a later date. What we did see was a short pre-rendered clip of a Lakers-Celtics game and a few minutes of gameplay by one of the game’s producers.

The first thing that was apparent from the clip (and, to a lesser extent, the gameplay demonstration) was that signature player motions don’t just stop at shooting this year. Player-specific celebrations and motions will also make their appearance in NBA 2K9. From Kevin Garnett’s chest pump following a 3-point opportunity to Ray Allen’s unique windmill teardrop, 2K9 does a good job of making the motions identifiable to the player. This even includes more subtle motions such as Derek Fisher’s movement coming off a low screen or Kobe Bryant’s no-look pass.

Time was also spent enriching the atmosphere of the game in-between quarters. After each quarter, the game will show replays of the biggest plays during the period from many cinematic angles—much like you would see from a television broadcast. Even the music during these sequences feels like something out of a TNT broadcast just before they flip to commercials.

The showing also revealed some elements that haven’t been touched up (though they may visit these before release). The audio commentary is almost exactly the same as the year before. There is the same awkward pauses and sometimes redundant speech as in last year’s game. In fact, the only instance of new commentary we witnessed was when Rondo brinked a free throw. Issues with players missing simple layups also seems to have made the transition from last year’s game but hopefully these issues are addressed prior to the game’s release.

We will continue to bring you additional updates on NBA 2K9 as the 2K team reveals more.

I started off playing NBA Live since 1998 till 2008...when I first got my Xbox360, I was bewildered by Live's graphics, but again, I know their cons. With accessibility to Xbox360, I tried out 2K7, hard for me to transition between both games as the controls for 2K is hard for me...I got 2K8, but this time, I managed it pretty well and been playing it regularly too.

Will be getting both Live 09 and 2K9 when they are released, but unfortunately, as realistic as 2K series is, something needs to be done to their graphics... That's my lttle rant...hehe.

The 2K series has been nice to me, but the best NBA game I've ever played was NBA Live 2005. That game had everything you could want...3 point contest, dunk contest, Rookie/Sophmore games in Dynasty Mode. Soooo much fun...

Live's gameplay has always been horrendous imo.

Last year they finally made some major upgrades, but still feels so far behind the 2k series. 2k needs to make some changes, but live has gone downhill over the years. Hopefully both titles will be great this year. I expect big things from 2k, but live has a lot of work to do.

Also, I'm with Nugg - 2k football games > Madden all day long...

NFL 2K5 is one of my favorite X-Box games of all time. The Madden douchebags bought out the rights to the NFL. I was devastated. I love all of the 2K games... I can only imagine what they could do with the NFL now.
