Wayman Tisdale, who spent 12 seasons in the NBA with Indiana, Sacramento and Phoenix, died Friday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 44.

Tisdale, a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, was recently elected to the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Tisdale enjoyed his best NBA season in 1989-90 with the Kings, where he averaged 22.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Tisdale was one of the good guys who always wore a smile on his face. He was also a tremendously gifted jazz musician. He jammed on the bass ala Bootsy-baby, but put a really cool jazz twist on it.

Wow... I have a relative who went to school with him at OU. She played volleyball the same time he played basketball. I heard he was the nicest person around and never had a typical NBA ego. This surprises me this happened.

Very sad to hear this. I saw the story on him a couple months of ago about how he broke he leg, how they found the cancer, and how Jazz really helped him survive. Great human being and great basketball player.

Before I started playing basketball and was really into the sport, I was a Suns fan. I loved Barkley and Majerle, but there was one guy who I thought shot the ball really cool, and it was Wayman Tisdale. I always had trouble shooting when I was much younger (around 10-15 years old), so I would kick my legs out when I took a shot.

I got that from Tisdale, actually. Not sure why, but it helped me with my shot, possibly because my body would drift sideways because of the lack of arm strength, and kicking my legs out in front of me would balance that.

I don't do that anymore, haha...but it was a big deal back then. Eventually, Kobe was drafted and traded to LA, and I started rooting for the Lakers.

I heard he was at St. John's in Tulsa, which is only an hour away from me. I planned on going to the hospital to try and see him, actually (thought maybe I could find a way to do that), but I'm two days too late.
