basic yahoo settings are always the best, i prefer H2H only because i usually play for money but for fun it doesnt matter, also the usual is 12 teams but 8 is good if you want very deep teams, i also have played with 20 teams and i was scraping the bottom of the barrell (i was picking up guys like juan carlos navarro and carlos arroyo)

you won't need to pay cash, but you will need to have a Yahoo ID, which are free.

No, i don't think so. Plus Yahoo has probably the easiest Fantasy Basketball setup compared to other Fantasy Basketball hosts.
