I have a friend who told me, Tim Duncan is a great player so as Kobe. But if you look at Tim, he doesn't draw that much detractors as Kobe does in forums, personal talks, and critiques. Suddenly, he sulked and murmured, "the guy is arrogant." That's why a lot of people hate on him.
Guys, what's your take about this mean perception of Kobe being a "cocky" sports icon?
Kobe can be cocky. He's the best and everybody knows it. As far as Tim Duncan goes, my Mom won't let me his name at all.

Young Kobe was abit arrogant. Not as arrogant as an older Paul Pierce, but abit arrogant. The more experienced Kobe, is not arrogant. Just full of confidence IN A GOOD WAY. I think that people say Kobe is arrogant because they are too afraid to say that Shaq is arrogant. It's all a way of hating on the guy that rivals Jordan.

He's defiantly cocky, but so were the greats like MJ. It's not a bad thing because it just goes to show you have a lot of confidence in your abilities. Just look at Kobe's swag on the court at times, his demeanor and tone of voice when media people ask him questions ( gives really brief insight, half a$$ses answers, leaves everyone scratching their heads wanting more) , etc etc. Dude is cocky as hell, but it's a GOOD cocky because it takes him to that level he needs to go and where the team needs him. If that made sense lol

Yeah at present, arrogant is just a nasty way to describe Kobe, but he's all about confidence. I agree that the younger Kobe maybe with the afro IS kinda arrogant, he wanted to prove himself to everyone too much, but it's a process he had taken to mature into the present Kobe that we grew to love...so what not.

To put in perspective why Tim doesn't ever get called arrogant, he deferred without a complaint the past two years to turn Parker into the number one scorer of the team.
He's taken pay cuts without complaint.
He's never complained about teammates or the amounts of shots he gets.
Tim Duncan just ain't arrogant and it's very rare to see amongst American athletes.

Kobe isn't arrogant, his just a guy who stays confident and knows he can be a great player and his MVP award proves it.

Not as cocky as he was back in the three peat days, but he still has a certain confident arrogance about him. Not necessarily a bad thing. It generally comes with the talent, TD is a rare exception. Guys like LeBron, Wade, Pierce(arrogant as hell) and Melo all have that cockiness/arrogance. I also think it has to do with the age, younger guys are more cocky but with experience players learn to tone it down a bit. (Again, Paul Pierce, not so much.)
