Philadelphia police are investigating a possible sexual assault case involving an out-of-town NBA player, the department confirmed today.
Lt. Frank Vanore, commanding officer in the Public Affairs Unit, said the alleged assault happened in 2009 but would not verify the name of the player, the team, or say exactly when or where the alleged incident occurred.
"We have an investigation into allegations involving an NBA player," Vanore said. "Right now, it is in the early stages. We're not going out there with the player's name."
NBC10 reported today that the player was a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, and that the alleged incident occurred when the Grizzlies where in town to play the 76ers on Feb. 11.
NBC10 said a Memphis team representative confirmed that the Grizzlies are "aware there is an investigation surrounding one of their players."
Repeated phone calls to Dustin Krugel, the director of media relations for Memphis, were not returned. The Grizzlies play the Boston Celtics in Boston on Friday night.
