My sources assert the Lakers and Hornets - prepared to commit past this season to Smith - are giving the Cavs stiff competition. Cleveland also is in the running for Gooden, but someone in the know says he's leaning toward the Spurs over the Mavericks. Both will make their decision known today.

Unconfirmed reports maintain Smith already has one of those wink-wink deals in place to rejoin the Cavs once he tiptoes across the waiver wire.

thanks West Cost..also Phil Jackson wants added depth

The Lakers apparently are not content to wait until Andrew Bynum returns — or not — in time for the playoffs. Phil Jackson said Monday he would talk to Mitch Kupchak about acquiring free agents Drew Gooden or Joe Smith.

Yep it would be nice to see Pau get some rest before we go heavy duty into the post-season.

I'd rather have Smith because he does a lot of small things that don't show up in the stats sheet. We need to sign someone because Pau can't keep playing 40 mins every game and the team is already tired.

..and even get to play alongside Kobe or Lebron?

That's a tough decision for Smith. He'll get more playing time in Cleveland though.

According to Rick Bucher the Lakers are trying hard to get both Smith and Gooden. Everyone thought it was a done deal that Smith would end up with the Cavs, but the Lakers are making a hard push to acquired Smith. He thinks Gooden may sign with the Spurs, but without a healthy Manu it will be hard for the Spurs to win a championship. It will all for not. He just doesnt know if it will be possible for Manu to be healthy.

also..Lakers are ready to commit past this season to Joe Smith...

does this mean we may not sign Lamar?

Trying to get both? If we do that, who do the Lakers cut?

smith would probably get the BAE

and i think we would be fine with lamar and ariza

joe smith will be our back-up center

why both guys though we don't really need both unless they plan to sit both odom and gasol and put out a bench of

smith
gooden
ariza
sasha
farmar

Don't post any Smith or Gooden pics on the forum. It's only bad luck to post their pics.

Artest, Brown, Webber, etc...

Actually, Smith would be good for the run. I wasn't in favor of picking up someone who wasn't with them in the beginning or before the trade deadline, but I'm for this. Pau has been playing too many minutes, and while Smith isn't a stat-stuffer, he's great on other aspects of the game.
