The Lakers had a back-to-basics practice session this afternoon in an appropriate small-college-gym setting (Southern Nazarene University). Phil Jackson estimated the team reviewed 14 different pick-and-roll scenarios to clarify for the players just how the coaching staff wants them defended.

“Last night (in Minnesota), the screen-roll defenses really hurt us,” Jackson said. “In Utah, the screen-roll defenses hurt us.”

Jackson said the Lakers were lazy early in the game in Minnesota and just switching everything on defense just so they wouldn’t have to keep chasing through picks.

Derek Fisher, who is the object of many of the opposition’s offensive thrusts, was getting electric-stim treatment on his left thumb.

One of biggest weaknesses, the pick and roll defense. Only now they're putting a focus on it? Better late than never I guess...

Hopefully they'll work on that 3pt defense too...

It's quite related. Many times 3 pt shooters are alone because we haven't defended well a previous pick&roll.

they should stay late, and do this after every practice until they stop screwing it up...and then do it some more

While he's teaching that maybe he or Rambis can also teach how to not leave a 3 point shooter wide open at end of games. Odom, Walton and others are constantly in wrong place at end of games and leave shooters wide open. Why Walton is in at end instead of Ariza is a story for another day I guess.
