The first number that jumps out at us as we look at the stat sheet from our last game against the New Orleans Hornets is their shooting percentage. They shot 50.6% from the field and 89% from the free throw line. That helps explain how we lost (116-105). Clearly tonight we need to impact their shots more than we did last time. As they showed in their victory they will ride the hot hand. At some points that game it was Chris Paul creating and penetrating and at some points it was David West. We must do a better job of helping especially on West. We must make him give up the ball or take a charge. When it comes to Paul, we must talk and “build a wall” of defenders in order to keep him out of the paint. We also want to try and keep him out of the middle of the floor whenever possible.
.....
The pattern that seems to be developing based on the first two games that we have played the Hornets is that we pull ahead and play very solid first halves and then they storm back and challenge for the victory. We must strive to be more consistent for the full 48 minutes. This has more to do with our mental toughness than with the New Orleans Hornets. We know that the Hornets feel this is a crucial game for them. We beat them twice already this season in their building and Head Coach Byron Scott will mark this as a statement game for his team. In the last game at New Orleans they were missing Peja Stojakovic and Antonio Daniels.
With Peja back in the starting lineup they are able to maintain their preferred rotation pattern. Their bench is very solid with Daniels at the 1, Peterson at the 2 or 3, and Posey at the 2,3, or 4 depending on matchups. Hilton Armstrong has been playing better lately in relief of Chandler or West. Daniels has helped this second unit find their identity – Posey’s and Butler’s averages are up since his arrival. With all of this in mind it is crucial that our bench plays a great game because they will be put to the test tonight.
