CLICK

The reason the Rockets insist that Battier guard Bryant is his gift for encouraging him into his zones of lowest efficiency. The effect of doing this is astonishing: Bryant doesn’t merely help his team less when Battier guards him than when someone else does. When Bryant is in the game and Battier is on him, the Lakers’ offense is worse than if the N.B.A.’s best player had taken the night off. “The Lakers’ offense should obviously be better with Kobe in,” Morey says. “But if Shane is on him, it isn’t.” A player whom Morey describes as “a marginal N.B.A. athlete” not only guards one of the greatest — and smartest — offensive threats ever to play the game. He renders him a detriment to his team.

Which is why you completely missed the whole point of the excerpt.

Battier understands that there is no way to stop Kobe. The only way is to make him shoot less efficient shots, and to be drawn to areas where Yao is. Battier's defense is brilliant. Kobe's just that good that he can overcome great defense.

Exactly. There's no way to completely stop Kobe, a great defender is one that makes it difficult for him to score and forces him to take tougher shots.

Well it seems like every other time Battier guards Kobe he ends up having a 10-32 night or something like that. lol

A lot of it has to do with IQ. More often than not, when Kobe plays against a good defender he takes it personally and goes one on one A LOT. Then when he starts struggling it only makes him want to prove himself more and his shot selection grows worse until he makes a couple in a row.

Basically he doesn't think very clearly when he plays Battier.

Reading the NYT article about Battier, I was fascinated at his philosophy of not fouling. Kobe abuses his opponents by drawing fouls and being automatic from the FT line. By not fouling Kobe, Kobe's Points per shot is purely based on FGM/FGA, which usually isn't Kobe's hotspot (until this year where he is averaging 47% FG). But in general you want to score much more than your FGA's.

Battier is a great defender. And he has one of the higher basketball IQs on the NBA. He's hard working and intelligent, gotta love him.

When he's asked why Kobe doesn't tweet, @thugraider37 said he offers this reply: "Does God tweet?"

Only team defense can stop Kobe...
