The Sacramento Kings agreed in principle to a deal with the Boston Celtics on Monday night, a league source told ESPN.com. The Celtics will send Sam Cassell and cash to the Kings for a future second-round pick.

Barring any changes overnight, the deal is expected to be finalized Tuesday afternoon with the league office.

The deal helps the Celtics by removing Cassell's salary from the team's luxury-tax computations. The Kings give up virtually nothing to do it as the pick is heavily protected. Furthermore, another league source says the deal could pave the way for the Celtics to add another player to their roster prior to the playoffs. The Celtics had a maximum of 15 players on their current roster.

Cassell hasn't played a game for the Celtics this season, but he's been an important veteran voice in the locker room. While it's unclear what the Kings will do with Cassell, most likely they'll waive him.

Yeh for real. Why did the Kings do this? They're not going anywhere and they'll most likely waive him.

How in the heck does this make any sense for the Kings? Get one player they'll end of waiving probably for a draft pick. Sounds like some under the table crap is going on just so the C's can free up a roster spot and save some cash.

I honestly wonder if this was cleared space for Marbury?

This makes a little bit more sense now:

I've just been told by a source close to the Kings that the Sam Cassell deal is done.
The Kings get the Boston point guard and cash in the neighborhood of $500,000 to pay his salary and then some in exchange for a future second round draft pick. Considering cash is King for the financially-struggling Kings, it is worth noting that - per the numbers crunched by AOL/Sactownroyalty's Tom Ziller - the Kings make about $350,000 in this deal. What's more, the pick is heavily protected and I believe the Celtics won't get it if - as is expected - the Kings waive Cassell (Update: I'm told the Celtics would still get the pick, but it's conditional until 2015). I'm sure I'll be talking to Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie sometime today, but Boston GM Danny Ainge has confirmed the deal.

First thing I thought of too LD2K.

They Celtics are clearing room to sign a free agent. The one that fits with them is Marbury. I can't think of a shooting big man that they covet.
