NAPA, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Raiders signed Adam Archuleta to a contract on Monday in a move to add depth to their defense.
“I was just waiting for the right opportunity and the right team to play for and they came with some interest so I’m happy to be here,” Archuleta said after his first practice Monday night.
Archuleta had a try out in the morning and then took a physical before signing his deal. Oakland released safety Greg Wesley to make room on the roster.
Archuleta, a safety for seven years in the NFL, will move back to linebacker, which he played in college in Arizona State. He will contend for the starting strong side linebacker job in Oakland with Robert Thomas, Sam Williams and Ricky Brown.
“We’re going to play him at linebacker and special teams and see what he can do for us,” coach Lane Kiffin said. “We worked him out this morning and he moves around extremely well. He was in very good shape so we’re going to give him a chance.”
