Doc and L-fool, please defend these. All power rankings are meaningless, but he needs to tweak his "system" if these are going to be the results. Yeesh.

I'm not going to defend these. Rankings should be flexible.

No defense for that. If he puts ORL ahead of us for having won head-to-head, fine. BOS? We have a better record (% and GB), we've beaten them twice, they lost twice at home in the last week?

I thought Hollinger was an idiot. Was never shy about saying so. I thought his rankings and analyses were oversimplified, based solely on data points and overcomplicated, based on data points that he used "esoteric knowledge" to "magically" entwine unrelated points and establish causality...

Nothing here has changed those opinions.

I don't think he "puts" any team anywhere, he uses some sort of statistical analysis to determine the rankings, which shows the fallacy of relying on stats to measure success.

Here's Stein's weekly rankings, which make more sense. Again, meaningless, but fun reading.

It's John Hollinger.. Who the hell cares?

I'd plow Vanessa Bryant.

One of the biggest problems the Lakers had last season was the issue of not finishing games and team defense. The guys looked focused and determined not to have the same result as they did in June last year.

this made me laugh. Cause we just kicked azz in boston and cleveland. Is this guy for real wow.

CoMe on, he's not a hater. You can think he's stupid for doing this worthless "statistical analisis", but in the end he's just using a calculator with some raw data as input, he doesn't decide who gets put where.

Some people just don't understand statistical analysis. Calling him a hater because of his power rankings is just plain ignorance.

I don't call him anything, daco. His statistical analysis is so flawed that it's broken if the Lakers aren't #1 right now. As Scott P so eloquently stated, it "shows the fallacy of relying on stats to measure success." It was a nice opportunity to bag on him! :P

I wasn't referring to you Ken. Don't get me wrong, I've condemned Hollinger's over-dependency on stats before on several occasions, here and on CL. I was just making a point to the people who think he's a hater. Hollinger has no control over who tops his rankings because it's based on an equation he made up years ago. It's as if they think that, years ago when he thought of this ranking system, he somehow had the intention to screw over the Lakers now in 2009.

I didn't think you were but I'm the one who posted this thread, so I wasn't sure. It's funny that you say that though .. and accurate! By the way, you MUST change your avatar!
