BEIJING -- Zhao Beibei is a 19-year-old university student and a volunteer at the Beijing Olympics.

Yesterday, after a one-hour media session with the U.S. men's basketball team, she was one of about 20 young Chinese girls who walked stride for stride with Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant as he left the press auditorium and made his way to a private room reserved for the team. The girls were all wearing volunteer credentials, but it was clear this was personal, not official, business.

They were respectful enough not to touch Bryant, but they wanted to be in his presence. It was small-scale Beatlemania.

Minutes after her brush with Bryant, Zhao was still euphoric. She was giggling, cupping her hand to her mouth and calling friends on her cellphone to tell them of her experience. When she was approached by a Western reporter, she seemed embarrassed that she was in such an elated state, but she agreed to be interviewed after issuing an apology.

OMG reading the entire article also made me tremble with excitement for the privileged ones now in Beijing that can get to see Kobe in the flesh...you guys can consider me one of those chinese fans where if I see him in the flesh, I will go so emotional that tears will roll down my eyes...and I'm a 25 yr old GUY...>.<

The crush of cameras and microphones surrounding Bryant was twice that of LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the next most in-demand player.

This pretty much explains everything else.

It is a really great experience to meet kobe.
Ive been to almost every lakers and suns game since moving to phx like 6yr ago.
of those 6ys of games, ive only had 2 kobe interactions.

1. First one happened in 2005 playoffs against the suns. me and bro went. i tapped a 24 across my kobe jersey. the game happened the night after they reported kobe was changing numbers. we brought a sign that said, 24/7. you know? kobe and lamar. kobe saw it while stretching and gave us a thumbs up.

2. november 2, 2007. Kobe never comes out for a pregame shoot around. he always goes to the court in the back of the arena. he finally comes out. everyone cheers and is excited to see him. all of us saying, "Kobe dont leave", "kobe we love you". after hes done. he walks back in and i get a high five from kobe. i was like a kid on christmas morning. lol.

one of those things, that never leave u.
Everyone in china is getting huge treat from kobe.

Funny how I thought natives in LA can better get to a Lakers game than one overseas...=/

The thing is I don't live in LA anymore so I can't go to any games. But I know what you're saying about the people that do live in LA. Sometimes people just don't have the time or can't afford it. They either work or go to school and since most of the games are during weekdays, it's not always an option.

It's a shame he can't be appreciated like that in the US.
