Considering Phil's personality the dramatic way he's announcing this isn't at all surprising.

No point in becoming upset over it now, though. We still have this season and next season to go after titles.

Phil's old as hell, he should be spending these years going on fishing trips in Montana and meditating for 5 hours while playing his drum. No homo.

no way in hell should he "go fishin'"

im sure he told them before he told the media.

Even if the players knew, this brings alot of media attention to us.

Do we really want that?

He may not of. That said i don't think it affects this season. It may be a motivating factor for next season with the players. I think it may bring a sense of urgency to the players knowing they only have this season and next with PJ.

If Phil is indeed going to retire I say give the job to either Rambis, Shaw or B. Scott if he's available...

Phil didn't say he's going to retire...he said they are going to take it "one year at a time".

Good! Hopefully he'll keep coaching the Lakers until he can't walk anymore...

Well, Phil DOES deserve some rest. The main reason why he's probably still coaching besides the fact that he can get more rings is because of Jeanie Buss.

Magic's run as a head coach was terrible. He didn't know how to deal with players on an individual level, and he took it out by yelling at everyone. If he was even near decent at doing it, he'd be doing it somewhere now.

Mind games by Phil Jackson.

He announces this right now because he wants the players to step up their games so they are pressure into winning him two more rings.
