We are taking a break from "Pau Gasol Month" To honor 2nd greatest scoring performance in NBA history

Los Angeles Lakers vs Toronto Raptors January 22nd 2006

Points: 81
Rebounds: 6
Assists: 2

We are 4 days away from the anniversary one of the greatest scoring Performances in NBA history. But 1st, lets take a look back

THE YEAR: 2006

The Lakers claim the title of "rebuilding" after missing the playoffs last season for the 1st time since 1994. A team that lost their star center to the Miami Heat. A city divided, a coach gone, and the Big Diesel nowhere to be found. The team now is in the hands of 27-Year-old Kobe Bryant, who is trying to build up a team, that can't even figure out their identity, but they found some help in their old friend, "The Zen Master"

The Lakers started off their rebuilding season in-consitant, but found themselves 2 games over 500. heading into January 22nd versus the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors, led by 21-year-old Chris Bosh found themselves rebuilding as well. Under 2nd year coach Sam Mitchell, the Raptors, couldn't do better then a 14-26 record, but things were looking up.

Starting Lineups

L.A. Lakers

G Smush Parker
G Kobe Bryant
F Lamar Odom
F Kwame Brown
C Chris Mihm

Toronto Raptors

G Jalen Rose
G Mike James
F Matt Bonner
F Morris Peterson
C Chris Bosh

QUARTER #1

Toronto 36
Lakers 29

The Raptors seemed in the driver's seat for much of the 1st half, as Jalen Rose kept pounding away at the young Lakers. The Lakers shot 12/26 from the field in the 1st, while Toronto shot 15/22, and was 4 of 6 from 3 point land. Kobe had 14 points, and was looking like a usual 30 point game from the kid out of Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania.

Quarter #2

Toronto 63
Lakers 49

Mike James put the beating down on the Lakers in the 2nd Quarter, Propelling the Raptors to a 14 point lead at the break. Kobe had 12 points in the 2nd, which brought him up to 26 points. The Raptors were in the driver seat with no signs of stopping, until the 2nd half rolls by, where the earth stopped rotating for just a second...

Quarter #3

Lakers 91
Toronto 85

The Lakers erase the lead by the Raptors with a lead of their own, Kobe scoring 27 points in the 3rd quarter sky rocketing his total to 53 points. 3 pointer after 3 pointer after freethrow, Kobe kept pouring it on the Raptors, who just saw their lead go to the graveyard. The sold out Staples Center who booed the Lakers at the end of the 1st half, was now behind their superstar. But they had not seen anything yet...

6:00 - Kobe : 64

5:30 - Kobe : 67

4:52 - Kobe : 70 - 1 point away from Elgin Baylor's laker record

4:24 - Kobe : 72 Kobe has the record

2:35 - Kobe : 76

1:41 - Kobe : 78 Ties the 2nd largest scoring performance

1:41 - Kobe : 79 2nd highest scoring performance

0:00 - Kobe : 81 Point Game

Final Score

Lakers : 122
Toronto : 104

Toronto : Stunned
Lakers : Amazed

Kobe : It was like I was playing Playstation

All I could say was ... wow.

I still can't believe that performance. It sure was an amazing thing he did. I mean putting up 30+ points is already considered a great performance. 40+ points is like a great achievement for almost any star player on a team. 50+ points is usually something the highest any star player would probably achieve in their whole career. 60+ is like impossible for many since you rarely see those. Anything higher than that is simply unbelievable.

Barkley, Malone, Ewing, Stockton, R. Miller aren't in the "greatness" category because they haven't won a championship?

It still haunts Barkley and especially Malone.
