FIBA: FIBA Europe has announced the nominees for its annual Player of the Year awards for 2008. Winners in each category will be selected by a public and an expert panel vote. The winners will be selected based on their performances in 2008 on club and national team level. Voting will cease in January 2008.
The winners will be announced through fibaeurope.com in early February and they will be presented with a special trophy at dates and venues to be announced. Members of the public who cast their vote online and enter their name and email address details when doing so can win Molten basketballs.
Leading light for Spain at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing where he was the leading scorer on the way to a silver medal finish. Domestically, Gasol flourished following a mid-season trade from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Los Angeles Lakers, helping lead them to a spot in the NBA Finals. He averaged 18.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest in 27 games for his new team.
