BREAKING NEWS: Bynum suffers torn MCL, Out 8-12 Weeks

sighTLN has been informed that Andrew Bynum has a torn MCL due to the injury suffered the Memphis Grizzlies in which Kobe Bryant collided into his knee. The MRI results have been keeping the entire world waiting and now we have some results.

Unfortunately, Andrew Bynum will be out eight to 12 weeks, meaning the Lakers possibly could begin the playoffs without their starting Center…

    From Yahoo! Sports

Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum has a torn right MCL and will be sidelined eight to 12 weeks, the team announced Monday.

Additionally, according to Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld

That’s official – no word yet on treatment (surgery, etc)

There is some VERY GOOD NEWS about a MCL injury…

Treatment of a medial collateral ligament injury rarely requires surgical intervention. Almost always, some simple treatment steps, along with rehabilitation, will allow patients to resume their previous level of activity.

Guys – heard it’s a “SLIGHT” tear. So let’s hope it’s a grade 1 or 2 MCL injury. I think he’ll be back by playoffs.

    • David

You guys are panicking prematurely. We are still the best team in the west without him, and we know we can get to the finals without him also. Worst case scenario he comes back May 1st, 1 month before the finals.

HAHA.. Just in time for the game in Boston.. Let’s see how we measure up. But it just sucks that December-January is a month for injuries. Last year it was Bynum.. the year before it was Lamar with his shoulder..I guess the league should have Winter breaks those two months.

    • T.A.

OUR GOAL is to get home court throughout.

that is our main goal with drew out.

stay focused people, things arent going to all of a sudden be bad for us. this will make us stronger

    • jazz_suck

Lets pray for Drew, and we are good enough to win it all w/o him!

    • kobe8

last year we got to the Finals without him. great loss but i think we still the best team in the West. With him in the lineup we’re dominant but without him we’re still a great team. we probably wont have the best record in the league which means we wont have home court advantage if we get to the Finals.

That’s F’CKED UP! Makes me wonder if this kid will ever reach his full potential now! 2 knee injuries in 2 seasons…Sam Bowie??? Hope he can get his confidence back after this one. They said 8 to 10 weeks last year also. I wouldn’t expect him back this season…again! Now you have to trade Odom for a banger. We can’t go into the playoffs with what we have…Bynum was our only improvement while other teams got better. I say we go after Wilcox and Watson from Oklahoma Thunder for Odom…..

    • LAKERMIKE247

ON DECEMBER 27TH THEY SAID FARMAR WILL BE OUT 8 WEEKS WITH HIS KNEE INJURY
THEN COMES BACK ON JAN 25TH

even if he comes back you cant count on him to dominate like he was starting to in the last month, we have to just forget about him for the rest of the season ad work hard for that championship, we were 2 games away without him last yr, lets just hope we can get there again this yr but have a different ending.

But dont count on bynum coming back full force, it took him a yr to get back to dominating status.

    • gill z

give josh powell & chris mihm a shot

      they can do it collectively

play ariza at least 35 minutes a game

    • gugy

      Sucks,

one more season that this guy is out. Seriously, even if he comes back in 8 weeks as best case scenario. He will not be in top shape until the finals. If he makes by then.
I am start to think this kid has knee glasses.

      Let’s wait again for next season. F U C K!

    • xtro

at least try getting a veteran big man for the physical play in the playoffs. wilcox, joe smith, ‘zo, pj brown. at least do something. rasheed wallace!

    • T-Dub

Whoever believes that Odom in some shape or form magically steps his game up after 10 years of not doing so, also believes in fairytales. He is the only trade asset the Lakers have. To enter the playoffs with this squad, we won’t make it to the western conference finals.

    • ilikebasketball

this is a reall big bummer and scary that last year he was supposed to be back for the playoffs as well, BUT BUT BU!! but did everyone here forget that bynum was playing like crap except for the last 2 weeks? and that we beat boston on xmas day without him being a factor at all really? we can still be the first in the west, possibly in the league, and still snatch home court throughout. we just need him to come back for the playoffs.

    • Daniel

This is bad news…very bad. But here’s some good:

We get to see Mihm play
We get to see Sun play
We might even get to see Mbenga play
We get to gossip about trade rumors (Odom, Walton and Mihm for Shaq?? LOL…imagine how much fun that would be)
The timing of this injury gives us a chance to square up against Boston and Cleveland on their home court. If we win, we’re solid. If we lose, we know that with Bynum back in time for the playoffs we’ll be fine.
Kobe has a chance now to get another MVP if he keeps this team afloat on the top of the Western conference
With this squad as currently constituted we were able to get to the finals. We just can’t let this injury affect us that much and keep bringing our A-game every night. Tonight’s game will be telling – the Knicks will be looking to jump on us – pay attention to our players’ body language as it will go a long way in telling how mentally tough we are.

    • John

Our team is more mature now than last year, Ariza isn’t injured like last year, and Pau Gasol is playing tougher than last year.

Losing Bynum is a HUGE blow, but we will adapt. I’m still saying championship, and who knows, 8-12 MAY be a HUGE stretch.

      you must not watch basketball.

bynum our only improvement? trevor is back and we are all more experienced after last year.

plus new orleans blows compared to last year, and utah is a non factor cause of injuries.

seriously! any nonlaker fans that come to this site will see fakers. it’s sad.
WE WERE IN THE CHAMPRIONSHIP LAST YEAR WITHOUT BYNUM! OF COURSE WE NEED HIM. but don’t sell our team out yet, you posers!! and our team has hardly changed(besides improving) so quit denigrating this team.

yes, we gotta get bynum back. but 3 weeks ago we were still the best, and that was when bynum had something like 3 rebounds in 5 games. so everyone needs to chill! and just wait to hope he comes back at the start of the playoffs, to give him time to get adjusted.

Also, remember, the Lakers still do have a roster slot open (only 14 players are under contract) so a trade really isn’t needed.

well thats a heck of a time to be out..but he will ready for playoff(hopefully) stay positive guys we made it last year without him

      GO lakers..

    • Italian Lakers Fan

I see about 30 panic answers. LOL, that’s funny.
With a baddest team than this one, last year
we went to the NBA Finals.
We dominated the hardest Western Conference of the last 10 year.
And now you’re writing in terror ” We’re F+++ed up now” “Blah Blah Blah”.
      Take a valium.

We still are the best roster in the league, in the regular season.
In the playoff, we will have Bynum back, so where’s the problem?
The worst case is 3 months. THE WORST!
We still have the same chance.
      And this time,
there’s no surgery that will f*ck up the time for the rehabilitation.

If the Medical staff does all the things correctly ( and that means: DON’T EVEN TRY TO THINK TO FORCE THE TIME OF REHABILITATION which would rush the therapy and it’s a big risk, for his present and his future carreer…), we can have him in time for the first days of April, WAY BEFORE the Semifinals and Finals.

I really don’t understand all this panic.

    • Geloman

per Dr. Michael Kaplan, as interviewed by Mason and Ireland …

Doctor says the usual recovery time is 4-6 weeks MAX so the 8-12 week estimate is overly conservative.
-90% of all MCL ligaments that are torn DO NOT require surgery because it’s in an isolated chamber in the knee and can heal on it’s own.
-Tearing the ACL is much more serious and would’ve required 9-12 month recovery.
-MCL tears prevent side-to-side movement. That will be the last thing to come back to him.
-Last year’s injury was much more severe and tougher to grasp because it’s less common.

    • david gamboa

if Kobe can still prove to the world he still owns the MVP, he NEEDS to step up his game from here on out.

we were 2 wins away from the NBA championship w/o Andrew.
With Andrew we were suppose to get over that hump.

Now with him out, for about 3 months, we need to step our game up including Odom.

Boston game is on Thurs. and Cleveland on Sunday.

Two big test to see how we measure against the East teasm
becuase Teams in the West arent that hard like CLE and BOS.

Get well, Andrew. hopefully he revoers quicker than last year.
If it requires surgery, get it done now!

      LAKERS #1 baby!

    • T-Dub

We are about to be EXPOSED big time! Even winning with Bynum, we played no defense. Can’t stop anybody! Odom, Zasha, Vlad, Fluke’s numbers are all down from a years ago. Our dumb players are just as dumb as they were a year ago. Our weak, soft players are just are weak and soft as they were a year ago. How did we improve?? Ariza? He’s good for a couple of plays per game. Is that it? Look out for the Spurs, Hornets, Rockets all of which added impact players. Don’t even mention Celtics, Cavs…who we beat at home and they were missing 2 starters, and Magic who we couldn’t beat with Bynum.

    • JFK-analysis-at-TLN

I read every comment on here..some were good, some people are way too paranoid..
when and if you read this remember it..
we will be in the finals..even if we are the 8 seed it makes no difference..we will be there (unless we lose Kobe and that won’t happen)

we are just about three months from the playoffs..Bynum will recover..he will take a few games to find his rhythm and get his game conditioning back..

and we will win the title and we will look back at this ans say to ourselves

      “WHAT A SEASON”

    • T-Dub

Toughness and experience goes a long way…neither of which this Laker team has. Look at all of the NBA champions over the last 20 to 30 years. They all had tough…physically and mentally..NBA veteran players. Not one young exciting inexperienced team has won a title. Thats what this Laker team represents. Young , exciting, fun to watch…does not equal TITLE! I was sure we could have won WITH Bynum and homecourt. Homecourt, something that everyone said we needed in order to beat Boston in a series. Well thats out the window. Now, we need tough physical veterans on this team.

guys tell me please, bynum will be back in 12 weeks right, so count out February, March, April. that’s 12 weeks. and when do the playoffs start????? after April 14. so if he misses 12 weeks which is the max he will only miss the first round of playoffs maximum. but please I wish the MAX 12 weeks is true.

It’s nice to think like that, but that’s what happened last year. But there were setbacks.

The difference is we have Trevor Ariza who like Bynum, has improved his play. And if there’s a slight chance that Chris Mihm and return to form like he did 3 years ago that would be a bonus. But I’m not counting on him …

Yes, I would like Bynum back in the playoffs too, but let’s be optimistic, we can’t expect him back for the playoffs guys …

I can only hope for a Jordan Farmar or Kobe Braynt-like (remember his shoulder?) recovery. (Coming back sooner than expected)

This is crazy. this is bad timing or is it? first the Suns are having a bad season, kobe shaq and phil are gonna be reunited, and bynum goes down. eventhough i dont think the suns would deal with us (lakers) it would be intresting if we got shaq back and we gave them vlad, mihm or anyone who will fit in a deal. not the core guys though. (kobe, fish, LO, Ariza, Gasol, sasha, farmar). I’ve seen crazy things go on with the lakers before. so why not, Shaq wants to retire here, he did just say that kobe and he were the best one-two punch ever created and tha the media mested there relationship up. so maybe we needa little drama to bring back what is rightfully ours (The SHIP). i dont know im depressed and dont know why this has to happen to our team now. maybe im just dreamin but it could happen. also then bynum would heal and then we would be so physical. with kareem and shaq teaching bynum he will be the complete package.

When you watch Laker games do you actually get into it when the Lakers score, when they go on a run, when someone (not just Kobe) does a spectacular play? Do you cheer, support the team? Or, when you watch a game, do you just sit there slouched on your coach waiting for something bad to happen so you can say “I hate this team. we need some better players”.

Please, never use the word “we” and “Lakers” in the same sentence because you are clearly not a fan nor are you one of us fans.

    • dom1020

You see while you guys type these long ass paragraphs, all I have to say is, Fuck.

    • Lakersfan9

Would totally not be surprised if they are saying 8-12 weeks to be overly conservative, as to not piss fans off or make them worry if they said 4-6 weeks and he wasn’t back by then. Hoping for the best, but at the same time I’m hoping that if this team really wants to win a championship as badly as they say they do, they are prepared to do it without Bynum.

    • 123kid

can someone explain this to me. i mean i could understand bynum will need some time off. of course he wont be back in the next week or two. but what i dont get is that bynum said he was able to put pressure on it a bit, but they wanted him to have the crutch just so theres no stress on it. but my question and concern is, could the doctors or professionals be over estimating his time off. i mean just like farmar, could the doctors just be saving their own butts and just always seem to give that estimate of 8-12 weeks. what do u guys think on the severity of the injury? do u guys honestly believe it will take 8-12 weeks when bynum himself thinks it isnt as bad as last year.

    • green_apple

i just hope that it is not like last year
8-12 weeks is better than the whole season.
homecourt advantage will be tough to get, especially when we play almost all our games on the road.
let us just be positive that drew comes back before the playoffs.

    • bernzter

      I’m here…

My thoughts on this… It’s bad for Bynumite.. but it’s good for the rest of the team because this way, the bench mob will have more minutes in the team and therefore more experience…

Look on the positive fellas! Imagine if everyone in the roster got minutes because PJ saw the huge potential he has sitting on the sidelines!!!

The only question we have to ask ourselves and our team is this… Would the real Laker please stand up! and make an impact for your team…

Step up and shape up… LO, LW, CM, JP, SY, and DJM… Now is your turn to show the rest of the Laker Nation what you are capable of and what you can bring to the table…

Sure enough we need AB and the core group… but to make a team, you need all 12 to work together in perfect synchronisity… Once we achieve this, we can’t be stopped…

Lakers in ’09 has the deepest bench… we just have to prove it… Especially now…

So for all of your Fakers out there… Check where your REAL loyalties are rooted… in the Team or in your favorite players… If you go for the Franchise (as I am) good on you, if you go for your player (shut it!)…

      Nuff Said…
