It looks like the Bulls are reaching out to Phil *gulp*

ESPN: The Chicago Bulls have reached out to Phil Jackson through back channels to gage his interest in returning to the franchise he won six NBA titles with, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation. There has been no direct contact between Bulls officials and Jackson, according to the sources, but people close to both parties have spoken and come away with the belief that Jackson would be open to a potential reunion in Chicago next season.

    Bring back Kurt Rambis!

    • kobe-wan kenobi

a real winner as head coach

  • Chris Manning

Interesting story. It may be Chicago’s way of trying to lure LeBron. We’ll see. Lakers MUST pay Phil. He’s worth the 12 million, no question; 4 titles on 6 finals appearances. On way to third straight NBA finals potentially with chance to win another cookie. This is a situation we’ll need to keep an eye on.

    • JFK-analysis-at-TLN

12mil is a bit too high in this economy for any coach man. I say 8mil and he is good. It’s not like this guy is not already RICH RICH RICH-plus he can share Jenny’s inheritance lol

    • KindSir

Seriously 12 mil is way too much for a coach

    • Gino

i’m sorry but i have to disagree. 12 million is reasonable for a high level coordinator/manager such as phil. unfortunately this is what sports has become, it’s become an entertainment and business. but just like any business, if the team fails to deliver a product that people will enjoy then the product won’t be sold. phil orchestrates the talent, centers the team, and keeps the team focused. without a good coach and with the high level of expectations in LA, most people will buckle under all the pressure to coach LA. if anyone can find someone who can do the same job as phil for lots less money, by all means let’s bring that person on board. otherwise it’s easy to criticize “high salaries”, but you have to also consider how many people can actually do the same exact thing.

  • JFK-analysis-at-TLN

haha- lets not get distracted with this crap… our focus is on PHX and winning the title this yr- we can worry about this in a few months

    I 100000000% agree!

  • Xtro

Only 2 words that will make Phil stay in Los Angeles: Jeannie Buss.

  • LC09

man if yall think phil is leavin us after we win back to back titles yall must b on sum other ish.. phil aint leavin

  • Gino

we need to keep phil. lockout or no lockout. we cannot just simply let him walk without a fight. why in the world would simply give up on the winningest coach in lakers history, and winningest championship coach in nba history. why would PJ start all over again, in a young new team, when he’s planning to retire in the next 3-5 years? that’s so much stress to start all over again. the only benefit for him to move back to the central division would be the shorter/centralized travel times to different cities.
why does espn, or any sports news agency for that matter, seem to always have impeccable timing to deliver distracting news about the lakers?

    • lakerman1

Lebron James that is why Phil would leave becaues he stated he would like to coach him and Buss has already expressed per Jeannie that her Dad does not want to keep paying Phil that much money. Is he worth it hell yes but unless you have been hiding under a rug or just landed on earth businesses are only interested in the bottom line. I know because my Company laid off all of the production people and is moving that part of the operation to Singapore. This is how life is and how life will be. I love the Lakers but my Wife and job are ten times more important. Lets just enjoy this run and see what happens in the Off Season.

  • kobe-wan kenobi

buss does not want to pay him
because JIM the idiot buss, does not like phil and think phil/jeanie threatens his power

Phil at that point will leave and go to win a championship with Lebron

je coached mj, pip, kobe, shaq, all of them never won anythjing before PHIL

if he does w lebron his legacy will be even more amazing

if Phil leaves this time is on BUSS

    • Marwan Marzina

I’m sure Phil would rather retire with the Lakers rather than go to the Bulls. Trust me on this, he has a great legacy here in LA with the Lakers and ending his career in LA would cement it all.

    • LakersFirst

“buss does not want to pay him
because JIM the idiot buss, does not like phil and think phil/jeanie threatens his power”

What do you think this is? An f’n soap opera??? Jerry Buss simply does not want to pay him $12M because the Lakers payroll for the players is over $90M. He’s trying to reduce expenses. Simple business. “JIM the idiot buss, does not like phil and think phil/jeanie threatens his power” has got to be the dumbest thing I’ve heard here in a long time.

  • nando08

sure believe chris broussard, how unclassy to release this news now, could he not have waited 3 weeks. Do u guys really think phil will leave after most likely winning no. 11 with a possibility to make it 12 next? Lebron, rose, and noah, does not equate to a title, orlando would still be better. This is stupid, im sure phil will be in la next season, kobe made it clear he wanted him back when signing his extension. Hopefully buss pays him what he deserves, i know i wouldn’t leave the best team in basketball…just espn finding a way to include their “king” in everyday stories…

    • Marwan Marzina

If LeBron does go to the Bulls, it doesn’t equate to a title like you said. But that would make them the #4 or #3 seed in the East, nothing more. To go over the bar and say that they will win it all when (if) LeBron signs with them is completely absurd.

  • Marwan Marzina

I find this hard to believe. He has hinted at retiring if the Lakers don’t win it all this year, but he will stay if they do. Why would he leave, under any circumstance, a title contender for a playoff contender? It just doesn’t add up.

  • Robert

The only possible reason for Phil to ever leave LA, is if he is convinced that LeBron can be coached into getting a set of rings. But LeBron alone can’t do it. MJ and Pippen, Shaq and Kobe, Kobe and ? (maybe Pau), LeBron and … who? Even the superstar needs another big (center or power forward). Phil will not go out with a whimper.
He doesn’t need to ‘build up a team’ to a championship. Too much work. As “Gino” mentioned, only the fact that long distance travel is minimized in Chicago, might help its cause.
If Phil would ever do that (coach a team with LeBron), he would cement a legacy of coaching 3 of the all time greatest players (MJ, Kobe, possibly LeBron) to championships. But it might take a while for him to get LeBron and the team into that type of shape (takes 2 years to learn the Triangle, for most players). Too much work.
The Bulls are helping Phil increase his bargaining power. That’s actually a good thing (for Phil). Don’t know if he will get up to 12M, but certainly will be well above current coaches max (7M?). Just another 2-3M above 5M, no worries about luxury, or salary cap. If the Lakers get past Boston, he’ll be back for sure. 4 3-peats by a coach — will NEVER happen again.

  • Varick Hudson

Give Phil the money all 12 Mil and more if needed to keep the Greatest winningest franchise and this winning nucleus of a team together for as long as it can stay together, and not destroy it over equivocating over whether the Coach should be paid less for being successful at being the Greatest at what he does.

  • lakerman1

If anyone has been keeping up Jeannie says that Phil will coach somewhere she just did not guarantee it would be L.A.

  • lakers are the bomb

People Phil is gone. He will get La Brick, and Bosh
and thats all he will need to get to win the east.
The supporting cast is there Rose La brick,Bosh,Noah
    henrick thats a good team.
Lakers can get Byron or B shaw for 4 million each.
Rambis only got 5 millon in that shit hole he went to.
So getting Shaw and Scott for 8 million is a deal.
Phil is the best but Jim Buss is a idiot .And wants to play poker with Phil. Buss is going to lose. Pay him his worth.
Chicago has money to spend and Phil wnts to get paid
he feels insulted to take less ASS HOLE JIM.

    • kobe-wan kenobi

      my feelings
      jim is a douche bag
too bad the dad backs up the idiot instead of jeanie

Once again ESPN getting a hard on over something that isn’t even close to happening. Next week we will hear that unamed sources have reached out to LeBron James butler or driver to gauge his interest in coming to the Lakers. It is so beyond ridiculous what these fools come up with. ESPN should just join forces with the National Enquirer. Just like the Chris Bosh story from last week, people who cares about his crap, the Lakers and Celts are ready to do battle again and then all we will hear is Game 6 from 2008 cause they hate the champs and the Black Mamba.

  • lakers0828

If Phil and the Lakers win it this Yr I see Him either Retireing with 11 or Coming back for a 2 yrs More and Then I see him Retireing and I think The Media has been Over doing just Trying To make things Worse for the lakers and Being a Big Distraction !!
