usa.jpgYahoo! Sports: United States coach Mike Krzyzewski was asked Wednesday what he planned to give Kobe Bryant for his 29th birthday next week.

“We should use a reverse birthday thing, and he should get something for us — a qualifying berth in the Olympics,” Krzyzewski said. “That’ll be a great birthday present for everyone.”

Bryant will make his U.S. debut Aug. 22 in the FIBA Americas championships, with the Americans playing for a trip to the 2008 Olympics. Injuries and off-the-court troubles have prevented the Los Angeles Lakers star from playing for previous national teams.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a while, just having the chance to represent our country,” Bryant said after a workout at Valley High School. “It’s a very special moment.”

Bryant teamed with LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire during Wednesday’s drills.

“We just clicked instantly, so it was very encouraging,” Bryant said. “The timing is much better — the timing on cuts, the timing on passes.”

Bryant is the most notable addition to a U.S. team that finished third in the world championships last year, missing out on an automatic berth in the Beijing Olympics.

Remember that report about Richard Jefferson, Luke, Arenas, and others being seen in Indiana? It looks like it could’ve been for a wedding.

    Jason Gardner’s Wedding
I missed a day of shooting over the weekend because I had to go to a wedding. It was my old college roommate’s from Arizona, Jason Gardner’s, wedding. He got married after 14 years together with his junior high girlfriend. He finally got married.

Me, Richard Jefferson, Luke Walton and Channing Frye from the team showed up. Coach Olsen showed up as well as some of the assistant coaches like Jay John, who is at Oregon State now. It was fun. We had a good time.

I couldn’t decide on a gift. So, I kinda paid for the wedding. You don’t know what to give for gifts so you give money. If they end up using the money for the wedding, you end up paying for the wedding.

I didn’t know what to give! What do you give a guy that’s getting married? I don’t know.

Jason leaves for Germany, I think, to continue playing basketball overseas as soon as he gets back from his honey moon in Mexico.

It really was a great time. Me and Richard, for some reason, always end up having a bragging session when we’re around each other and try to out-do one another. For some reason, he thinks he’s better than me. He can’t fathom that he’s only the third best player from Arizona, and I’m No. 1. He just hates that I’m No. 1. He hates to see me on my own video game, he hates that I’m a three-time All-Star, he hates the fact that he only got a bronze medal … all of that. He is bitter about it.

I was so confident in this team until I saw that little scrimmage game they had. Wow they still can’t guard the 3-point line. It is ridiculous! That IS the international game.

I saw something else on that scrimmage game too. The big time players (outside of Kobe) was still waiting for calls in drives. And in that scrimmage they were called…that’s not going to be the case during the olympics or even in real international play.

I dont think any of that is really going to effect the USA team from winning. The D can be easily tighten as they play. The biggest problem that I see is perimeter shooting, with the way international teams play D, hitting perimeter shots is key to winning games. With the additions of Redd and Billups and of course with the addition of the most talented and gifted offensive player on the planet. This team will win gold.
