On this Valentines Day, I think its fair to say we all love Kobe (not in that way fellas).

kobehand.jpgLA Times: Kobe Bryant has sustained a torn ligament in his right pinkie and has decided not to undergo surgery that would sideline him for six weeks, the Lakers said today.

Bryant initially hurt his finger Feb. 5 when the Lakers played New Jersey. The injury was originally listed as a dislocated pinkie, although the team revealed today there was also a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and an avulsion fracture, in which a small fragment of bone had been pulled off by a tendon.

Bryant, who saw hand specialist Steven Shin in Los Angeles today, will try to play through the injury instead of having surgery. If he opted for surgery, he would face a six-week recovery process.

Here are a few quotes from Mamba…

ESPN: “My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days, and hope I can still continue to compete at a high level after that rest,” Bryant said in statement.

“I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer’s Olympic Games. But this is an injury that myself and the Lakers medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis.”

ESPN: Rich Bucher sounds-off

    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !

  • Sako

if kobe doesn’t get surgery, will it be much worse during the summmer? kobe’s tough, he can get through this, hopefully, unlike shaq who misses a month for a papercut

  • kingkb24

i bet this is all bs so he doesnt have to play in the all star game

  • http://lakers.com k0be da 1 andonly

Wait so is he going to sit out for 6 weeks or what????? SOMEONE PLEASE CLARIFY!!!!!!!!

Kobe’s going to be aight. The one thing we have to remember is Kobe is the best at playing hurt, you’d basically have to chop off both hands for him not to play.

  • http://lakers.com k0be da 1 andonly

    nvm lol

  • http://www.mr47.com mr47

I would also like to know if it would either A. Get worst or B. affect his shooting in the short-term. That sounds PAINFUL. This is a tough decision, especially with 8 weeks left in the regular season.

  • LA fan in Manila

That’s why he’s the most intimidating player in the world because he plays hurt, but still manages to score above 30. Kobe can pull this through, he’s one tough competitor.

  • CJ

i think he has to miss the olympics now and get surgery right after the season is over

  • http://getgarnett.com jonasjulienjoseph

dont worry about this, guys remeber when kobe muessed up his knee real real bad in da 05-06 season but waited till the summer to get surgury…and he did it and missed only 2 games in the season of 06-07, and that was way worse,so he could do this, he just has to play smart and not take that much gambles that got him injured in the first place, and he has alot of time scince its that all star breAK SO HILL BE COOL

  • somelakerfan1

dirk is replacing kobe for 3 point shootout

  • nyla

WHY?? Lol Will we ever be injury free??? Put some armor on out there or something!

  • west213

Get Well Kobe, fuck man one good thing happens to the Lkaers there is another shity injuty to mess it up. like the bynum’s and arizas.

  • lalakerfan

how bad is this injury? anybody familiar with the terms here?

    shit man

sorry bout the profanity, im just so pissed

  • schnide

    “…hand specialist Steven Shin”
    ^i found that amusing

  • Kobe4ever

Kobe is King FTW!!! He STILL averaged 30 ppg in his last 4 games w/his pink finger hanging off his hand!!!. If he says he’s going to wait, it means he can tough it out like he’s done his entire career. You’ll see, and then no one will be able to deny him MVP and FINALS MVP. Oh btw he’s still planning on playing in the All-Star Game…so add ALL-STAR GAME MVP as well.

Thanks for taking off the video on the front of the site really appreciate it and the Kobe/Gasol 08 banner is Fukin genius bro. nice work.

  • Newtdog

I still believe that this is all a ploy, so that he can just rest his dislocated finger. It’s not as bad as they are making it out to be.

  • Phant0M

    not goood at all

  • Steve Nash loves Shaq

He’s just crying for MVP votes!!!

  • http://thelakersnation.com kb24 4life

i think kobe had that broken bone on his hands since the first time and didnt noticed and he played through it..

  • leo

kobe jacks off to mitch too much

  • http://thelakersnation.com kb24 4life

just read kobe will play in sundays all star game…

  • LakersOnFire

he’s gonna need 7 more rings before he actually needs to use that pinky.

  • lalball81

Sounds painful. It’s pretty bad, avulsion fractures and ruptured ligaments are nothing to laugh about and take a while to heal. I can’t imagine playing basketball with shooting hand as messed up as Kobe’s, but that’s why he’s the best.

  • lalball81

Nah, I doubt he’ll play in the All Star game. Besides, wouldn’t you rather have him rest his hand for the stretch run to the playoffs then risk irritating it again?

  • gugy

I want Kobe to rest because Shaq probably will play his first game for the Suns against the Lakers.
I want to see Kobe kill the fat Diesel! :-)

  • e

kobe’s a warrior, he’ll be fine, last game, his stroke was as good as ever…im sure he’ll play thru it

  • JB714

if this happened to lebron then he’ll be out for da season…..this is why i love kobe, he plays injured and doesnt let us down. i bet hell play if he was in a wheelchair. and he actually plays really good when hurt

    KOBE-08 MVP
    08 CHAMPS

  • ab4sure

Does kobe play better injured??? NOt in that GS game where we had the game and kobe was playing on one leg and then we lost it. Would it be better to get this taken care of now and he could play the last 10-12 games of the season to get ready for the playoffs?? We do have Gasol now and Bynum and Ariza coming back in 3 weeks. Plus we have this week during the all star break. The real test is in the PO and if this is going to affect his shot at the end of the game. Kobe can play thru pain but will he be as effective. This could be the biggest decision of the year. I hope for the lakers sake he is making the right one.

  • LakersFirst (Change) (Close)

My question is, was the tendon in his pinky torn in the NJ game, and he has been playing with the torn tendon for the last 4 or 5 games? Or, was the tendon torn in yesterday’s game?

If the tendon was torn in the NJ game, and he’s been playing on it, then it must not be too bad because he’s averaged about 30 points during those games. But if it was torn yesterday when he reinjured it, then we’ll have to wait and see if Kobe can play through the pain.

Seeing how the Lakers are 35-17, I think Kobe is going to tough it out and play. He now knows that his teammates score and has the confidence that his other teammates can score. He just has to be the bait to set them up.

  • lakerschamps08

damn ab4sure that u go again with ur hate on kobe…wat was that a strained groin and hit in the groin..see how has he been playing since injury umm pretty good besides the hawks game SSOOOOOO hopefully he be ok.. but if he has to miss the olympics that gonna suck but rather have him in lakers uni than a usa one….

  • Sopi

i really do think lakers got fukin cursed

  • MILO

i fu-ck-en hate Shaq that idiot had some vudoo done onto the Lakers

  • ab4sure

Calm down 08. I think you need to read my post again. Your reasoning is way off. Hate??? Your way off… think before you write and react.

  • kingkb24

if kobe plays through and the lakers make it to the playoffs in top 4 or 5, there is no dougt in my mind that he will be MVP

  • Luis

Agreed Lakers cursed. With Mamba no worries we got Pau

  • http://thelakersnation.com Tyler

i think he should do it right now then hell be ready for the playoffs

another excuse when the lakers lose in the first round of the playoff hahaha… raja bell, bowen and big cheap shot rob knows where to hit kobe to alter his shots…. bwahahaha….

Maybe it’s best if Kobe goes through the surgery now and get it over with because we need him 100% healthy to contend for a title this season. Kobe is a quick healer, he’ll probably be out 4-5 weeks and I’m sure the Lakers can stay afloat in the playoff standings.

  • LakersFirst (Change) (Close)

[Comment ID #26113 Will Be Quoted Here]

Hibachi – you can go bl*w Raja. Raja Bell is gay!!! He’s not that great of a defender. I don’t know why everyone thinks he’s that great of a defender

and Robery Horry is old. Their not going to put Kobe on him. That’s what Bowen is there for, however, Bowen too has lost a step, which is obvious because he isn’t defending players like he used to.

Face it Hibachi, the Lakers are going to dominate AGAIN!!! I know you can’t wait to see the trophy back in L.A.!!! It’s coming!!!

  • pjt

Playing Ball all through my high school years I had a dislocated pinky on the same hand as Kobe’s…I would just ware tape on the finger, and during the games never even thought about it. The only thing when ever the ball would hit it, or when I would jam it, it would pop out a little….Kobe will be fine…its just a matter of playing with a little pain, and Kobe has proved he can do that many times. He’ll get if fixed in the off season…I doubt though he’ll be in the Olympics.

  • miguel

THIS MAN IS A WARRIOR!!! whenever people start to doubt him is when he shines the brightest!! and by him playing through this it shows a great amount of comitment to the lakers. Kobe will retire a laker and hang up a couple more banners for staples!

  • David

There is another alternative to surgery. It’s called prolotheraphy and it rebuilds ligaments. Unfortunantely, not many doctors know about it though. It worked great on my back. If only I could relay the message to Kobe…

  • KB24 RULEZ!!!

Yeah!!dis means more time for the other players and they will have d chance to prove themselves!!!Kobe needs a rest, let the other guys do the job..better cure it or else..u dont wanna drop again the first round in da playoffs when that injury becomes…

  • BEC

[Comment ID #26131 Will Be Quoted Here]

You might want to read more carefully because its not just a dislocated pinky. Kobes dealing with a torn ligament completely different. I know what it feels like to play with a dislocated pinky and its possible to still play well like you said, but Kobe tore a ligament thats a lot more painful and effects your game a lot more.

  • BEC

The way i see it kobe should be smart and have the surgery, but time the surgery so he enters the playoffs a 100%. Wait till Bynum comes back then have the surgery, so we dont fall out of the playoffs, pau, lo, and drew can hold the fort for six weeks wont be hard. Bynum is expected to come back mid march around the 9th so have surgery at the beginning of march kobe can come back mid april and get set for the playoffs. This injury is on his shooting hand, his effectiveness wont be where it should be.

  • KB24 RULEZ!!!

yeah that’s the way it should be done..have that surgery or else the whole LA nation community will curse you if the lakers couldn’t make it at least in the western conference finals..so you better keep healthy!!

  • Jrich

[Comment ID #26133 Will Be Quoted Here]

I googled ‘prolotherapy’ and you’re right. It says it helps rebuild ligaments through injections. There’s gotta be a way to relay this message to Kobe. Somebody tell the black mamba about this!

The Lakers have/are in contact with some of the best medical staff/doctors in the world…they’ll know what’s best.

  • Lakers4Life

This is a ploy so he can rest this weekend LOL!!! You can tell it on Phil’s face when they interviewed him after the win from Wednesday. He wanted to smile but didn’t. Plus he didn’t know about it being re-injured until the reporter asked him about it. That only means it’s not that important. Kobe would have told Phil something during the game.

  • aibarra03

If kobe has the surgery now he will be able to play the last 10-15 games of the year. I think he should do it. Our team is strong enough to hold down the fort till he comes back. Bynum and Ariza are coming back soon. Then come playoff time we will be at “full strength” completely healthy. No matter what happens Kobe will play in the 08 Olympics. He has never won a gold metal and is extremely patriotic. He is the leader of team USA. Plus who’s to say he wont injure it worse later during the season? Then he will have to have surgery and maybe miss playoffs? And nobody wants that!

  • Michael_23

Ric Bucher is trying to scare us again. If Kobe gets surgery, time to take Coby Karl out from the D-League again …

  • mfoznot

    Bucher is a douche!

  • Phant0M

    Ireland was just on ESPN

he said kobe is gonna play thru it.

Yeah I’m sure my ligament is torn too, I thrashed it like three different times…and even today when I hit my pinkie or anthing like that it’s painful…I never have gone to have it looked at, but I’m sure I need surgery on it…my point is playing with a damaged pinkie on your shoting hand sucks, but it’s managable.

  • gugy

Kobe take the week off, relax, do a lot of treatment on your finger. Then reassess the situation.

I think the Lakers can survive having Kobe out for 6 weeks.

  • DingleBerry

kb sits out 6 weeks kiss the playoffs goodbye. we will be a lottery team without him the west is just to strong…

  • MILO

Kobe should go into surgery now instead of trying to play like that.If the Lakers can manage w-out him thruout the 6 weeks than that will really say something about the team to the entire league.I have heard too many people say that the Lakers are 1 KB away from beeing a lotto team, well that was before Gasol.I strongly disagree and think the Lakers should prove to the world that it’s not true.Boston (wich i hate to bring up) has been barely dooing it w-out KG, but hey they’re still winning…

  • Phant0M

If u watch the game… I see nothing that could of hurt him…

Right now i think its a ploy so he can miss the all star

    just my thinking

    Minor problem.

  • Lakers4Life

    Actions speak louder than words!!!!

Kobe is playing his best game right now. Don’t worry. He knows his body than any of us. Right now he just needs to rest that finger. He should just not play for 3-4 weeks.

Hm… excuse huh? when one of YOUR players is willing to play through an injury that would require surgery (and play well because we all KNOW what kobe is capable of even when hurt) then come and talk.

    otherwise… watch your mouth.

  • ab4sure

Kobe go take care of your hand and we will sign Stackhouse for a temporary replacement.

  • LakeShowtime

I played with the same injury as Kobe a long time ago, and it doesn’t really affect your play, you do feel like you only have 4 fingers but that’s like the first couple of days, after playing with it more and more you start to tolerate the pain more, the thing that would help Kobe is a good tape job, like the one he has on the front page of the blog, so that his flexibility on the finger is the flexibility of his taped finger.

When I got the injury and started to play I felt like the ball will roll out of my hand, but after I started to figure out how to control the ball on passes and shooting, you forget that you are injured, the only concern would be how would he react to people hitting the hand but if you think about it his injury is on the bottom of the ball if it was his index finger than I have no doubt surgery was his first option.

  • Ignard

Kobe, I love ya man but I think you should get the surgery over with NOW come back 100% for the playoffs.

The Lakers do have a good team, even with Kobe, but the problem is, in the west, not too many games separate playoff teams from non-playoff teams. If a team loses 3 or 4 games they are out of the top 8.

If more games separated the teams, then the Lakers would really let Kobe get the surgery (and Kobe would probably want to), but the fact that only a few games separate playoff teams and non-playoff teams, the Lakers and Kobe both don’t want the surgery – Kobe’s surgery is more of a risk because the playoff race is so tight.

  • ab4sure

Actually Buss has advised Kobe to have the surgery, but kobe says he wants to play thru it. They said they will back him in that decision. Usually it is best to back the star player. I just hope he is making the right decision. AS fas as making a PO spot, they do have Bynum and Ariza coming back. And is playing with an injured Kobe hand good enough to win the ship??? That is the big question. Afterall the lakers aren’t shooting for just the PO. Also, Shooting with four fingers is not recommended.
