Matt Barnes has received a one-game suspension without pay for “escalating an on-court altercation and  actions following his ejection.”

It was widely speculated that Stu Jackson would take action.  Barnes will serve his suspension tonight when the Lakers visit  the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.

On the other side, there has been no suspensions handed out to any Mavericks players, including Jason Terry.

Here is a full statement from the league:

NEW YORK, April 1, 2011 – Matt Barnes of the Los Angeles Lakers has been suspended one game without pay for escalating an on-court altercation and actions following his ejection, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

The incident occurred with 9:23 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 110-82 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center on March 31. Barnes will serve his suspension tonight when the Lakers visit the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.

Do you feel this suspension was warranted?

  • Drew

It was warranted, but why not Terry…

  • sopi

    Terry 2 games at least

  • Lola

I do not understand the logic. Barnes suspended for a game; and yet, Terry does not get suspended for his overt shove and inappropriate behavior.

Moreover, even more unjust is the fact that Terry’s flagrant 2 foul is downgraded to a 1?

This leaves me with a particularly bad feeling since just a few weeks ago, Bynum was suspended for 2 games for his ‘hard foul’?

Who is making the final decisions on these rulings? Obviously some west coast bias is involved. That is the only logical explanation that I can fathom.

    Poor judgement all around.

  • Toni

What about Jason Terry? – Afterall, he is the one who instigated this whole fiasco. … Come on NBA, be fair and hand down his suspension orders as well!!

  • Trooper1616

It is warranted, and acceptable. Matt did what he had to do and his teammates deffenintly appreciated what he did.

  • mr_JE

come on this is bs nba. ya we the champs but come on. straight hatin

  • angie

No problem with the 1 gamer for Matt. But JT should’ve received the same penalty.

  • Kyle

It is warranted for Barnes, but why not Terry?

  • T411Lakers

Lol. I was wrong about the league coming down hard on both of them, total Fail.

But terry gets nothing and barnes is suspended…the League is a piece of crap. Terry should be gone 1-2 games…

  • Rob Frongillo

so bynum got a two game suspension for not playing the ball. What was terry doing, playing pattycake…..

  • Dragon

They should have let them play again fighting will never go away from the nba so why bother to take these guys out they just being competitive. Tension usually happen in a competitive game. As long it was broken up then its fine.

  • OaklandLakers

In todays NBA. Yes. Yesterdays? No. I don’t like him storming in from the side though. Face up with the guy you’re in the altercation. Glad no punches were thrown. Cant be having players out for extended periods of time. Do your thing Barnes.

  • Stephen

Barnes suspension was warranted. Terry should have suspended as well. Not suspending him is bullshit and downgrading his foul to a flagrant 1 is beyond ridiculous. But remember guys we’re the Lakers. We’re not very well liked.

    • LakerMarc

You’re right Stephen..and this is Bullshit!!! Unfair calls….Me no likey!!!!

  • king-manu

he is a lakers of course he gets fined… look at the flag2 agains fish last week..kaman didn´t get anything despite going after fish…thats bullsht but thats the nba … kobe gets 2 game suspended for unnnatural move…since i am a nba fan its been allways like that… so of course its the lakers to blame

Wow. No suspensions for Terry? How is that even possible? He was the one who started the whole thing.

  • Niko

I know, because emotions are high, everybody wants Jason Terry suspended. However, he pushed Steve Blake and that’s it. How many times have we seen that in previous years? The most you got was a technical, or two at most and a fine right after. I agree that Barnes should have been suspended. Matt came in and shoved Terry when, obviously, he should have just played “peace-maker”. I agree with the League on the suspension. But, I do not know why their hasn’t been any fine or statement about Jason Terry’s push. Dirty player. Hope we do face them in the playoffs. Wanna kill those cocky fucks.

  • 123kid

not only did terry push blake, but lets not forget that he kept instigating even after the push when barnes was being held by their ast. coach. I think it should be fought and rethought about. but either way he signed himself for a death wish. aint no one from the mavs tough enough to wanna go against anyone from LA.

I have to agree that Barnes’ suspension was warranted since he came in after the fact and escalated the situation. That said, I think he did the right thing in assuming the enforcer role and going to the mat for his team, but that’s part of that role; you take the punishment from the guys upstairs.
This will pull a team closer.
It is almost a slap in the Lakers face, though, for the League to not only neglect to punish Terry any further for a blatantly hostile, dangerous and unnecessary action, but to actually downgrade the punishment handed to him in the first place. Stu Jackson might as well have said, “Hey, it was the Lakers and we’d all like to do that to a Laker player once in a while, so here’s a slap on the wrist. Good job, son.”
Damn, it’s lonely at the top, eh, Laker fans?

  • Lakers 24 7

It’s not really BREAKING NEWS when we expected this to happen. lol

  • LakerMarc

Just read how Cuban is having a media war with CWebb over his comments about the Mavs being Soft…….Truth hurts…hell The Lakers know all about this one….

  • laker
