Amar’e Stoudemire: “Pau is still Soft”

Photo by Chris Trotman I Getty Images

Amar’e Stoudemire was asked by New York’s Hot 97 radio reporter Peter Rosenberg, what it was like playing against Lakers All-Star Pau Gasol, and if he considers him soft.

“He’s still soft, you know what I mean”, Amar’e said with a laugh. “He’s a good player, but he has help down there with Lamar Odom, (and) Andrew Bynum. Those 7-footers down there, so he has a supporting cast.” Stoudemire said.

This is not the first time Stoudemire has had harsh comments against a Lakers player. In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals last year, as a member of the Phoenix Suns, Stoudemire said this about Lamar Odom’s 19 points, and 19 rebounds in Game 1:

“I’m not giving him no hype right now; he had a lucky game in Game 1. We just got to make sure we box him out. I think I focused so much on [Pau] Gasol and [Andrew] Bynum to where he snuck in there and got 19 boards.”

Not much to make out of this, as the Lakers and Knicks do not play again this year. Also, the likelihood of the Knicks reaching the NBA finals are very slim, considering their lackluster play even with the addition of Carmelo Anthony. (Video of the recent comments from Amar’e after the jump)

Pau Gasol is not soft, he can rebound even their are 5 centers in the paint. Amar’e is just saying that because he can’t beat Pau Gasol!! Let’s see about that in the Finals!

    • S Joseph

EXACTLY…..”soft” says the guy who’s team plays ABSOLUTELY ZERO defense and can’t seem to get out of their own way :-)

    • Goodbye4ever

There is no way in hell that amare will be in the Finals

  • Abraham

Pau has a career average of 1.7 blocks to Amare’s 1.5 and 9.1 rebounds to the tough guy’s 8.9 rebounds.

Amare frequently avoids contact on both ends, while we frequently see Pau involved with contact.

I guess by Mr. Tough Guy logic you need to have tattoos and pound your chest like a jackass to be tough.

    • LC09

WELL SAID WELL SAID!!! BRAVO!!!! amare shudnt b talkn

  • http://www.twitter.com/losrealali losrealali

A guy whose played on two No D teams is calling Pau “soft”?
I mean, I don’t say the Knicks are soft, but did you know their official sponsor is Lubriderm.
I don’t want to say the Knicks are soft, but I’ve heard 2 month old babies say, “$#!t, those Knicks are soft!”
I don’t want to say the Knicks are soft, but hey, their mascot is the Snuggles bear!

  • Rafael

All talk and no play makes Amar’e a dull boy.

  • Drew

Pau is not all muscles, but he is not soft. He doesnt shy away from contact but it is true that he’s not going to dominate like Shaq and Dwight.

Amare on the other hand has always been known to be a terrible defender. Not to mention his “soft” knees

  • Nick

Andrew Bynum responds to Amare’s “Pau is soft” comments via his twitter: “The NBA is a weird place! How can a man that plays 0 defense call a 2 time champion soft?”

  • http://www.kaley-cuoco.info Kaley Cuoco Insider

Wow. This is so sad. Amare doesn’t play ANY defense at all against good post players … and hes calling Pau soft. Is he serious?

  • Drew

Funny how a guy who was let go because his own team admitted he was a liability on defense has the sack to talk about a guy who’s been to the finals three years and counting. He’s so “tough” that his coach is making excuses for him saying that Amare is “tired”. (another word for soft). Pounding your chest after a dunk when your team is down 20 and there’s no time left doesn’t make you tough. It makes you a hater…and a loser.

  • lakerman34

Amar’e is the laziest player in the NBA. He had Steve Nash getting him WIDE OPEN in PHX, and he now has Melo helping him out.

Dude flat out doesn’t play defense. Stands around on defense, and looks for wide open dunks on the offensive end.

He’s a decent 3rd or 4th option though. Any team that has him as a 1st or 2nd (or “1A” as he put it) option won’t ever win anything. Period.

  • Nathan Manalo

Luck of muscles and tatoo’s for Amar’e. But for me, he cant dominate Pau Gasol as long as Pau is still a star for the Lakers. He can battle with Shaq and Dwight and he scores by the use of his on technique and post ups unlike Amar’e need a wide open space to create a huge slam. Boo Amar’e! Boo!! You did not score well last All-Star break so you make a different negative feedbacks and comments behind Pau Gasol’s back.

  • Kyle

Yea, whaever Amare! We’ll see you in the Finals!….oh WAIT! THE KNICKS WONT EVEN MAKE IT OUT OF ROUND ONE! HAHA!

Amare is Bynum soft? “No he punks me everytime”

  • LakerMarc

I agree with Amar’e…Pau is still soft..I think he has gotten tougher because he was embarrased by the comments made by the Celdicks in 2008. He added some muscle and plays tougher but just about anybody can bully him down there in the post. He may block shots and rebound which means he’s jumping up with energy and being proactive but when it comes to physical body against body play….more often than not Pau loses that game. Amar’e really dsnt have room to talk but he is 100% CORRECT!!!!

    • lakerman34

Maybe, in that sense, he’s soft.

But fact of the matter is, he is the best post player in the game-bar none. He scores on the post regardless of the defender, and he’ll send ANY guy’s shot, no matter how tough they are, to the rafters.

So, by your definition, his “softness” really doesn’t matter. Completely irrelevant and separate from his basketball ability.

      • LakerMarc

No it isn’t because I have seen him get pushed around by Horford, Perkins, Stoudemire, and Nowitzki….and he’s had very ineffective games where he can’t score down low, can’t rebound, and can’t even get in there so then has to resort to mid range play. That is irrelevant and separate from his basketball ability? NO ITS NOT…He’s a gem, I agree, wholeheartedly, but he still isn’t ideal or perfect and with his softness and all, he still is the reason the Lakers have won back to back championships! I am not hatin’ on Pau but, he is a softie! A skilled and talented Softie…Back Off Lakersnation…criticism can be constructive ….and dont get all butt hurt!

        • lakerman34

I don’t know why you’re getting defensive. That’s exactly what I just said haha.

If I get in a fight in the alley, Pau is the last guy I want on my side.

HOWEVER, when it comes down to it, I wouldn’t want any other big man on my team.

          • the lakers rock!!!!!!

ugh, listen to yourselves!, before pau, out in the 1st round, after pau 3 finals 2 chips, we as fans shoul be greatfull, stop critizicing him, try and play his position for a week and you’ll find out the hardway you are softer than he is

          • the lakers rock!!!!!!

there is a reason he get paid millions of dollars to play while you just make smart ass comments

  • G

    Amare still can’t play defense.

  • GreenPuke

Ok Amare im only gonna say this once you 0 rings and Pau has 2 rings and You cant play any def your self so STFU

  • Jack Bauer

Amare is just frustrated because his team is struggling and is not playing consistently. I also believe that he doesn’t have the patience and the will to overcome adversity with his team. Amare should stop talking trash about others, keep silent, and play basketball. Oh…He also needs to start playing DEFENSE, too. Kobe, Pau, Bynum, Lebron, Wade, KG, Pierce, etc….can all defend. Once Amare can play defense and win championships, then at that point, he can talk smack and back it up. Oh well! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Unfortunately, for him, he and the Knicks won’t be winning a championship anytime soon as long as the Bulls and the Heat are around in the East.

For now, let’s all enjoy the rest of the season. Go Lakers! Purp and Yellow!!!
