It looks like Lakers fans have a reason to be a little confident this season.
For the past nine seasons, NBA General Managers have been surveyed prior to training camp. The roughly 60 questions range from team predictions, player accolades, coaching, and defense. These guys are generally expected to know a thing or two about the game.
This year, the Lakers take the cake. 63% of GM’s believe that the Lakers will win the 2011 NBA Championship; securing the three-peat. Coming in a much farther second are the Miami Heat, at 33.3%, followed by Boston with 3.7%. The Lakers topped last years survey, taking in 60.7% of the votes. You read that right, our stock has risen from last year, despite Miami’s surge.
Moving onto the individual accolades section of the survey; Lakers still look good. Kobe Bryant (85.7%) and Pau Gasol (28.6%) we’re voted as best shooting guard and power forward; Gasol being in a dead tie with Dirk Nowitzki. Kobe Bryant comes second in the MVP survey with 25.9%, trailing Kevin Durant’s 66.7%. Kobe also runs away with the “which player forces coaches to make the most adjustments” category with 35.7%.
Phil Jackson is all over the coaches survey, taking in best coach, among best motivator. Derek Fisher is ranked as the top active player in the league that would make the best coach. Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant frequent the defensive category as well.
Walk with an extra pep in your step today Lakers fans, we’ve earned it.
